I'm planning something scary...
yeah, i am.
in the next week or so i'm gonna completely rebuild every computer in the house. no major upgrades or anything, but i decided it was time for the kid to have a rig that could play stuff other than just online flash games (big step for her actually, she moves to DDR2 ! w00t! ) and because i'm doing the kid's computer, i'm taking the opportunity to rebuild and re-organise my rig no.2 ![]() (^ there is sound reasoning behind that thought process, i just can't for the life of remember what it is atm) my main rig gets a new mobo and a new cpu cooler, so now i'll actually be able to use the pci-e slot that's completely blocked by my huge gfx cooler atm with a half decent cooler i might even gently OC my cpu for a change too ![]() i did both the laptops last week though, just in case the worst happens and i end up with 4 dead computers and can't figure out why ![]() scary week coming up

Re: I'm planning something scary...

it'll be satisfying when i have everything working just how i planned it, don't know if it'll be 'fun' getting there though ![]() atm i'm cleaning hard drives (making sure i don't accidentally delete irreplaceable pics or anything). so time consuming, and so boring

Re: I'm planning something scary...
I remember the bad old days when doing any kind of upgrade could render your system unusable for god knows how long. Hours of prodding, re-seating cards and hunting for drivers was a real PITA.
My last upgrade took my system down for 2 months although I can't remember how that could be possible. Turns out the new Mobo I had bought was faulty but I had know way of knowing which new component was dud at the time. |

Good luck, if you lose them all you'll still have the iPhone. But no flash games for the kids

Re: I'm planning something scary...
Well I'm waiting on an InWin Dragon Slayer showing up to have a play with, and cos I'm swapping a couple bits between comps I have to wait until I got everything before I start
Hopefully a day or two and I'll get cracking with it

Re: I'm planning something scary...
a problem already. with the first one, every time i shut down or restart, i have to clear the CMOS to get it to boot (or even POST). updated BIOS. rolled back BIOS. updated again. still doing it, can't figure why the case is nice though (InWin Dragon Slayer), lots of spaces making cable routing a joy rather than a chore ![]() and the bulging side panel with the spaces for 4 extra fans means the tall cooler i bought just fits too. so, anyone know why a mobo might need the CMOS reset every time you shut it down ???

Re: I'm planning something scary...
It's unlikely, but maybe the battery on the motherboard is bad.
The only other thing I Googled out was some guy who had some overclocking software which would apparently set some parameters to the values PC wouldn't boot with every time he got into Windows (which makes sense, but I'm guessing that you don't have such software installed ).

Check BIOS settings/voltages. Did you set your RAM timings and voltage yet? Just throwing out ideas, that's kind of a weird occurrence.

Re: I'm planning something scary...
thanks for the suggestions
it's not the battery, i changed that for a new one already. on the subject of BIOS, should i go into the bios and manually plug in all the settings for CPU and memory like i think they should be ?? what exact settings should i be using for OCZ PC2 4200 ram (i know timings are 4-4-4-12, but i'm a tad n00bish about voltages etc), and a Pentium E6300 (thats the 45nm one @ 2.8Ghz btw) ??? |
