Rebuilding my rig
Can't wait! I have to tell someone that's computer oriented, so that leaves you (plural) as my victims.
So, here are the specs: CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition (I'm finally going 45nm!) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper N 520 Motherboard: ASRock A770DE+ PSU: Corsair Builder Series 600W Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 Hard drives, RAM, and graphics card will be the same as what I have right now (2x1TB WD Black, 6GB DDR2 RAM, GTX460). Along with that, I ordered 2 Cooler Master 120mm and 2 200mm fans and a sleek black fan controller from Scythe. In order to get it looking as clean as possible, I also added a bunch of fan cable extensions to make it easier to hide the fan cables and to make it possible for me to remove the side panel without having a fan still plugged in. I cannot wait to get the stuff in.. I might even skip class to make sure I coincide with the UPS guy.

Re: Rebuilding my rig
Going 6-core but retaining DDR2? Seems a bit of a sideways step to me. Being the prices that they are, I would've flogged the DDR2 to cover the cost of an upgrade to 8GB DDR3 and made the option available for SATA-3 and USB-3.

Re: Rebuilding my rig
Going to be unlocked to a X6, in most likeliness.

Not if there's only 4 cores inside......

Re: Rebuilding my rig
Righty-o. Forgot only the T series are built on 6 core chips...silly me.
Mistype, then, on his part. But still. Seems more like a sidegrade though it still should fly through most materials available today.

Re: Rebuilding my rig
I probably won't see too much of a performance improvement if I go to DDR3, and of course my budget is only $500 for all the upgrades combined, so DDR3 RAM would've thrown me way over budget.
Also, the unlockable (Thuban core) X4's aren't on the market any more otherwise I would've gone for it. The ASRock motherboard supports core unlocking. I was going to get a six-core 1055T originally but I wanted more single-thread performance without breaking the bank so it was just natural for me to go with something that has less cores but a higher clock. My current Phenom is pretty bad when it comes to single-threaded applications such as the Sudoku puzzle generator I wrote.

Re: Rebuilding my rig
6-core... I must've been more tired that I realised.
Visible performance between DDR2 and DDR3 I'd say is negligible but you can sell DDR2 for more than you can buy DDR3 nowadays - I got 2x2GB OCZ 1600MHz for just over £22 the other day but you'd be damned lucky to find 2GB 800Mhz on ebay for around £20. To each his own. Still a nice processor.
