Re: Desk Chair
I'll have to start looking for a new one myself, as I'm guessing you might also be doing? I got me this cheap $50 IKEA a good while ago as a spare, but never used it until recently. The comfort isn't bad but what is, is that the center pole goes so deep down it's just about scratching the floor when I move... Well it's IKEA you might think but my previous more costly office chair from them was great, until the gas piston got stuck in its highest position after some six or seven years of use.
Anyway, the type of chair I prefer looks something like this. No arm rests as I've got a curved desk and tend do sit close, high back and preferably with an incline/pivot adjust of the whole chair for adding variation to the pose. I'm highly preferable towards a cloth surface over any type of leather. I had back problems in school and learned a thing or two about the importance of comfort and proper posture. By the way I highly recommend having a look under the seat and see if the fabric can be removed for the stuffing to be be improved or replaced some day. At least if you're getting a chair that is supposed to last you 5+ years. |

Re: Desk Chair
I bought my chair, I think, from Office Depot back in 2000 or 2001. The chair, itself, was built in Jan. 2000. Knowing how much time I would be spending at the computer, I wanted something that would last and be comfortable for hours on end. This one has definitely fit the bill. The only thing that I needed to do was add something soft to the hard plastic arms. So, I got a couple of those lambskin wraps that people get to put around the shoulder strap of the seat-belt system in their autos.
Otherwise, this swivel/tilt high back chair with the weave net upholstery has held up very, very well. Here's in image that is very similar to what I have. The style has changed ever so slightly...and mine is black....

Re: Desk Chair
I have a chair that I need to change. I got it for Christmas because the foam in my last one wore down but it's one of these "memory foam" things so when I sit in it for prolonged periods of time (funnily enough I do that) the foam remembers that my arse reached the bottom of the chair and I get a backache.
I'm thinking of getting a new chair next month, though I'm not sure which. Perhaps a 24/7 operator's chair as I don't like leather or mesh. The down side is the horrendous expense as they're somewhere in the region of £200 if I'm not mistaken. At work I have a chair for my desk that I don't know the name of but working on others' PCs it ranges between sitting on a PC, on my knees, standing or simply borrowing any old chair that's nearby.

Long claws! Suffice it to say I use chairs that I've gotten from Goodwill..... or out of other peoples trash.

Re: Desk Chair
i'd say 99% of the chairs i've sat in "recommended" are totaly uncomfortable....
the only chairs i have enjoyed have actually been some of the cheapest or oldest ones that i can actually sit in for hours without my legs getting numb or arms falling asleep or something. or getting a kink in my back.. i utterly hate the "perfect posture/correcting" chairs.. they are the worse for these issues. And some of these chairs can't take any abuse at all. The one chair i had broke a few years ago. The one i'm using now is actually older then that one... made out of real steel and built like a brick shithouse in terms of being compared to nowadays chairs that are junk. It's almost identical to my old chair... so i've been delited with it. this is most similare to the orginal i had ![]() And the current one i have that is similare... but just make the back padding considerably "shorter".... allowing me to lean back and stretch my back (arching over the back as it comes up to about the middle just below my should blades....) ![]() At home i use a couch....

Re: Desk Chair
thanks guys I am indeed looking at getting a desk chair but I don't really have much money so I think I'll wait to have choices that might actually last a while and have features that make it more comfortable
I like to lean back against something or hunch forward so a chair with a tilting backrest is a must and so is one that changes height or is the right height already. and I would also really like it to roll and swivel. I currently have a chair that is meant for the living room that looks like the one FUnster posted but it doesn't have wheels and I was thinking I might be able to put some wheels on due to it having a large ring as its base that I could drill hole through for wheels to go into, it currently also has armrests but I might remove those and just use the metal bars as the armrests are like 4" wide. on the other hand maybe I should measure my desk first to see if I can really fit it into the hole first, otherwise I love sitting in the chair when I don't need to be on the computer |

Re: Desk Chair
Steelcase Criterion (model #4535331DW). Got it 3 of them for $50 as they were broken. Company I bought them from though, they didn't realize that with things like the pneumatic cylinders, certain mechanics, the internal foam, armrests, and canisters, Steelcase has a 12 year warranty that covers these. Got 2 of them fixed for free, $100 to fix the other. $150 for $2100 worth of chairs.. I win.

Oh, another place to look would be a used office supply or discount office furniture store. In fact, check to see if Steelcase has a local store in your area. I have one just around the corner from where I work, and every now and again they get in used chairs. Might be worth a look. |

Re: Desk Chair
That is a good thought, I know that we have had some broken chairs around in the past and there is a close store and its the one they got them from cause they have pictures of a few of our class rooms on their site. I will look into both places, Thanks
