Re: Folding for HH!

I'm not sure how to find the deadline in the normal console version, sorry... But yes each WU has a deadline that it must complete before to receive bonus points. Bigadv units typically have four day deadlines and (for me) take around 3 days of 24/7 folding to complete. Regular SMP you should be able to finish alot faster (they also have bigger deadlines). If you're not folding 24/7 to do bigadv then the nvidia GPU route may net you more points than SMP.

I slotted my 9800 back in a couple of days ago (I'll explain why in my 7th blog - currently waiting on my 6th being uploaded), and the foldzorz are back underway.

Re: Folding for HH!

A heads up for anyone with a DX11 AMD card, it is apparently possible to run two GPU clients on a single GPU in order to achieve a higher efficiency. That way, this guy is getting a performance at a level of over 10,000 PPD out of a single Radeon 5870 (that's with the new Core 16 I blogged about). I plan to try it later tonight.

Re: Folding for HH!

You really keep an eye on everything folding related. It shows when I switched to the new core quite clearly.

The experiment was around semi-successful. The two instances worked side by side without issues to each other or to the normal functioning of the rest of the system. The performance gain was minute, though, around 5%.

The guys doing this mostly have much stronger CPUs and even they have noticed that this is taxing on the central processor so that's probably the reason why there wasn't a bigger gain for, even though the PPD hasn't increased much, running two cores kept my CPU utilization firmly at 100%.

Re: Folding for HH!

It could be that running two clients at once you actually see less points per processing power used.

To demonstrate my point, presuming that a single version of the AMD client gives you 60% CPU use, I bet you'd see more PPD in total by using a single AMD GPU client with an SMP client set to 40% CPU use, than you would with two AMD GPU clients.

I'll be sure to post my own results also when I switch the 6850 in at the start of July

The new ATI/AMD core is really helping my productivity, exactly half of this number was earned over the last 10 days:

Of course, blibbax is still a long way ahead, but I have to hand it to him, he really cares about his folding.

Re: Folding for HH!

Haha, not really - I just figure I might as well have it running while my computer would be on anyway, seeing as I don't notice it. I did notice that your points per week has overtaken mine recently, so it's only a matter of time before you take the lead - especially as I won't be folding so much in the summer holidays (my computer won't be on as much, and when it is it'll be gaming ).

What is slightly annoying is that I have 200k points with another team from a few years ago that I cannot transfer.

Re: Folding for HH!

I just got some "NANs detected on GPU/UNSTABLE_MACHINE" errors on my HD5870. The client (v7.1.2.4) returned succesfully finished WU (Project 5732 (Run 0, Clone 621, Gen 311) and then there were five attempts at Project 5738 (Run 3, Clone 582, Gen 395) WU, each failing immediately. Now it's folding a 5736/3/592/364 WU, no problem. Weird...

Re: Folding for HH!

Sometimes you can simply get a bad WU, as far as I can tell. I just delete the work folder and the queue file when that happens (has done two or three times in the past few months), then restart the client, and it just carries on as if nothing ever happened

Re: Folding for HH!

For those on AMD cards not reading the new driver threads, I'll repeat myself here.

AMD has finally fixed the OpenCL driver bug that caused the system to freeze when folding and watching hardware accelerated video at the same time. Catalyst 11.7 is supposed to have a working fix and I can vouch for 11.8 Preview to be working as that's what I'm using at the moment.

There also seems to be a slight increase in performance, I'm finishing my second WU with the new drivers and my estimated PPD is just short of 8000, up from 7600 - 7700.

Re: Folding for HH!

Guys, this info must be out there somewhere, but a short spell of googling didn't make me much smarter so I'll ask here.

What's the deal with SMP? I thought I'd give it a try so I finished two WUs so far and during both of them, my estimated PPD was barely over 1000 and that's quite a bit lower then what I've seen people get with similar CPUs. All 4 of my CPU cores were 100% busy (and there was no GPU folding during the first WU). When I finish a WU, my log says "Final credit estimate, 2782.00 points" or something such, but I only get awarded the nominal WU value (less than 1000). I do have a passkey.

You only get the passkey bonus after a certain number of WUs handed in with it I believe.

I read they manage about 13-14k PPD - similar to a 2500k.
