I just heard from my friend. She is safe, far away for the directly affected area. I am very glad for it.
Now I am worried for the tsunami. no idea yet how big it is going to be and where it is going to hit.

My Uncle lives in Japan along with my two nieces, but they are fine, far away from the affected area.

My thoughts and prayers are with those affected.

Seems things are just going from bad to worse over there now. Certainly some very, very scary developments with the recent explosion at the power plant.

From the looks of it, there might be a Godzilla after all.

Japan is being too quiet about the explosion. This brings back terrifying memories of 1986. I hope this is far less serious.

Well the Russians were doing dangerous tests and the reactor is totally different type. And the way how the Japanese cool's it is different than the Russian method. Russian just dumped a ton of stuff over the reactor causing the pressure to rise and we know how stupid that type of action was.

the worst thing about the russian explosion is that 95% of the radioactive material is still underneath the rubble..
hope the japanese one won't turn out to be as bad.

They are cooling it so that's a good thing. The Russians didn't to that. As long as they can pump new coolant to the reactor they have the situation in control.

I don't know, the official statement is that radiation in the vicinity of the plant is 20 times greater than normal, which is not that bad, but a Japanese station reported that they measured the yearly normal dose of radiation in just one hour. I also heard that there is a second nuclear plant that's having problems. I hope things won't get any worse and that they'll soon have full control over the situation.

Also, did you hear that the quake slowed down Earth's rotation a tiny bit and moved it's axis of rotation by some 25cm (10 inches)? It's not going to affect us in any way, but

isn't it? not even in the long run?
I mean, I heard/read/saw that the earth's rotation resembles more of an elipse rather than a circle.. i'm sure that that causes slight changes

I think you're confusing the earth's rotation on its axis vs. the revolving of the earth around the sun.

It's the speed of the earth's rotation on its axis that affects the length of our days. Speeding up the rotation shortens our days a wee bit.

The earthquake that hit Japan has now been upgraded to a 9.0 Magnitude quake.

Also, the entire nation of Japan was moved just over 8 feet as a result.

Currently, estimates of total deaths are topping 10,000.

And now, they are attempting to contain and avoid a second explosion at the nuclear plant. A possible meltdown is imminent.

Such, very, very sad news coming from one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world.

I feel for those lost and the mess those that remain will have to deal with...... Creepy feeling it's not over yet.

I've heard a report from the Japanese nuclear agency (forgot the name) earlier today that they were not optimists about the situation in the plant. Sadly, they knew what they were saying.
