Currently using a $31 copy of Windows 7 Professional 64bit (Upgrade) from a free student Retail edition of Windows XP obtained through the school I went to.(Who would have thought..).

A long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away (win95-98 era)... mostly because of logistical barriers, meaning there wasn't any viable possibility to actually buy the software, if you can believe that. But these days times have changed.

Not to mention that there are truly viable alternatives, free of charge. Ubuntu + OpenOffice + GIMP and other similar stuff...
