Earthquake in Lorca (Spain)
Well, I want to let you know that there have been two earthquakes in the city where my parents live and where I am at weekends. In weekdays, I live in another city (where I study) which is situated 100km from Lorca.
The first one was about 4.4 in Ritchter scale, the second one 5.2. At least, I have talked with my family and they are safe. The thing is that they are waiting for a bigger one......... They have told me that there has been a lot of damage in buildings and 5 dead people as far as they know..... Well, too worried here...

Re: Earthquake in Lorca (Spain)
5 dead from a 4 and a 5.2 quake? That's...weird. Is it normally a quake free area and buildings are not built to withstand quakes?
All the best to the people in the area.

Re: Earthquake in Lorca (Spain)
Well, that area has a seismic fault (South-East of Spain) and buildings are more or less prepared for earthquakes, but this has been a big one. Usually, every 3-5 years there is an earthquake but in a lesser extent (about 2 in Richter scale).

I wish you all luck, hopefully the bigger quake won't come.

i wish you all the best man...
hopefully everything can return to normal and advances can be made to bolster the resistance of buildings so that such tragedies are avoided.

Re: Earthquake in Lorca (Spain)
It's probably the old historic buildings that are having problems.

Re: Earthquake in Lorca (Spain)
Hope everyone is safe over there, Fantasma...
I feel weird because I read just this morning about this guy that predicted an earthquake in Rome on this date (11 May 2011). He died in 1979, but that didn't stop the romans from fleeing their city today... BBC News - Rome braces for 'prophet-predicted quake' |

Re: Earthquake in Lorca (Spain)
Even though that was a 5.2, which is relatively light as far as quakes go, (NOTE: I didn't say "only a 5.2" ) But! it was only about 1/2 mile deep, 1km. That's very close to the surface...... going to cause more damage.
There were also 2 quakes, the second knocking down debris that was loosened by the first. Hope it's all over now and there's no further damage.

Re: Earthquake in Lorca (Spain)
It seems that all has stopped now, there have been several aftershocks but they have been lighter (the bigger one was scaled to 4). I have talked with everyone I know there and all family and friends are safe which is the most important thing.
However, there have been a lot of material damage and we don't know exactly the reach of them. At least, I have phoned my parents and they have told me that my house has not received any important damage so I'm definitely a lucky guy. |

Re: Earthquake in Lorca (Spain)
Great news!
I really hope it's over, a similar earthquake hit a town here earlier this year (did a lot of damage too, as there were many older and not properly built houses). It was followed by a very long lasting series of aftershocks which fortunately didn't do much additional damage, but freaked everybody out each time.

Re: Earthquake in Lorca (Spain)
This weekend I can't go home, I can go into my house but I can't stay there for safety purposes....., well, I'll go to Lorca anyway to see myself the disaster and to visit my parents who are located in a city nearby (just temporal).
