Technology Facepalms
So, we've all had them...moments in our lives where something so uneducated/wrong has been said about technology it just makes you facepalm.
I'll start off: I have a 1000W psu. My dad still thinks it will always draw 1000W 100% of the time. From my mum: "The reason you can't use Flash on the iPad is because Adobe wouldn't pay Apple enough money to have it on their cool products." "Oh, I used to torrent too, but LimeWire kept giving me all these ads and viruses. How do you manage with that?"

Re: Technology Facepalms
I have an unfair advantage - I work in an IT department.
I was showing a member of staff how to use the phone manager to call other people internally. After I had finished going over all of the features she asked "So how do I end the call?" to which I replied "you put the phone down". We needed to run some routine maintenance on one of our high-use servers so a company-wide e-mail was sent out instructing all members of staff to log off at the end of their shift. One e-mail was received in reply: "What's my username?" Same person.

Anyway, a couple of months ago I was round my Aunt's, and she asked me if I could take a look at their computer. Apparently my 14-year-old female cousin had installed some piece of software, and my Aunt was pretty sure it was malicious. It turned out to be Google Chrome. When I explained to her that actually, this was a far better way to surf the web than IE7, she asked me:"So if I open this shortcut (Google Chrome) rather than that one (IE7), how do I access the internet?" Me: "You just surf the internet inside Google Chrome, it does the same thing as Internet Explorer, but better." Her: "Oh. So what's the difference between Internet Explorer and the internet?"

Re: Technology Facepalms
I was talking to an ex-girlfriend on my mobile whilst in the bath. After awhile she became aware of the sound of water and asked where I was. 'I'm in the bath' I tells her.
"Oh you idiot, if you drop your phone you'll get electrocuted!" Yeah, that 900ma battery's really gonna do some damage - WTF vv @ Tyrsonswood - I was too dumbstruck to think straight

I would have dropped the phone and screamed..... It would have been worth it.

Re: Technology Facepalms
today i had a customer walk in and say that all viruses and adware/malware become inert when you run windows in safe mode making it possible to remove them using a previously unworking anti-virus.... OR disables them. He went on to say that every week he starts in safe mode and then restarts so the bad viruses can't run.

This is nothing compared to the facepalms you run into in the guitar business......

Re: Technology Facepalms
The best one I had ran into was when I got a call stating that their mouse wasn't working and the woman was freaking out about it. I walked over to her desk moved it around a sec and when I picked it up, there was a sticky note covering the laser.

Re: Technology Facepalms
Now i have just had one from one of my elder sisters....
Today she asked me to look at some laptops (as she no longer wants to use the Ageing PC she has) at a very tight budget at around £500... She is not a heavey gamer.... So i opted for one that she can at least play sims 3 and the odd puzzle type of games... She asked me where do i put the game in to play it.. I said in the DVD drive it comes with.. She said "does it" i did not think a DVD Drive would fit.. (thinking of a D/T Drive) |

Re: Technology Facepalms
A guy came in asking to buy a CPU, now to a techy that could mean a processor, so I ask which processor do you want and he looks at me with a blank expression, then I go on to explain what it is before I could give him a good explanation this customer stops me and says "no no I mean the cpu with all its components" , so then I'm thinking he want perhaps a desktop specials (u know the tower with its components minus peripherals and speakers) so I offer him that and then again he refuses. This whole episode ate into my lunch time a guy basically trying to argue with me over what a cpu is yet , yet he can barely tell apart pc components, mind you this guys wasnt havin a giggle he was angry and he was soooo certain that I had no idea what I was talking about...... wasted my damn lunch.
The stupidity and arrogance of some people, he just wouldnt admit he didnt know jack about PC's, that way it would have been easy 4 me to help him, and find out what he really wanted.

Re: Technology Facepalms
LOL. Classic office joke. Pulled that on boss one time, and I couldn't stop laughing. He's what we call "a mouse lifter". They never move their arm when using a mouse, so in effect their mouse "area" is no more than 4 inches, and they have to literally lift and move the mouse every couple inches. All day you hear that damn mouse lifting, dropping, moving, lifting, dropping, moving with the odd click in there... place a sticky note on the laser, and then all you hear is bam bam bam.. *&$% *#$!! *$#**!! "Damn ******* mouse!" bam bam bam... LOL!

Re: Technology Facepalms
I get that sort of thing constantly, dawg. Monitors are known as PCs, the PCs themselves are known as CPUs... They don't like to be corrected but they do like to think they're "learning the proper terms for these things".
I had a good one for myself today - I was working on the coding for a button in VB.net that checked two dates against the current date. Each time I checked it, it didn't work so I tweaked it or changed it altogether to try to get it to work, it failing each time. After getting aggravated, I had a good look over and realised I'd added the code on the wrong button. Go me. I got a tad annoyed at one of our QC members today. They asked me for some call recordings that had been archived, five in all. I searched across the month of call recordings for the specified phone number. As there were so few, I sent them all across by e-mail and stated "here are all of the call recordings for that phone number across the whole month". She replied that she was after a call from the 15th of that month. It went on for a while, until our dialler manager re-affirmed my statement that the call was not there.
