Re: Underrated movies
I'll start:
eXistenZ (1999) Brilliant sci-fi thriller about loosing urself in a virtual world A Scanner Darkly (2006) ..... Keanu is not a good actor yip we all know that but the roles he catches and the stories around them .....brilliant Waking Life (2001) ......ahh man this movie, very deep movie dealing wth lifes difficult questions, it is one of the most meaningful, multi faceted films i've EVER SEEN. Many people coudnt follow it with all the college professors philosophers and people going off deeply into some intriguing discussions ,....its trippy animation didnt help. But after each segment its hard not to question urslf and ur own beliefs and ur way of life. Constantine (2005)...... its got Keanu again thats why i think it was underated, I enjoyed it

Re: Underrated movies
Recently saw Tropa De Elite 1 and 2 (Elite Squad). It's from Brazil and its brilliant! Everyone should watch these movies. I think its from the same filmmaker as Kingdom of God, so if you liked that movie, you'd love Tropa De Elite. The sequel is even better and eloquently manages to tackle social issues without being heavy handed and preachy. The movies are long but it was compelling throughout.
My brother also heavily recommended The Fall to me as well but I am looking for a time to watch it, sounds like an interesting movie although from the trailer it makes it look like a surrealistic fantasy movie which I'm not really a major fan of as a genre. We'll see when I get around to watching it. |

Re: Underrated movies
you can trust me, it's not a surrealistic fantasy movie at all. It's pretty dark.

Re: Underrated movies
Anime. Yes, I really mean that broad a range of films. Almost every anime film skips the cinemas in this country, Hayao Miyazaki's being the only ones I know of to reach the cinema.
Evangelion 1.11 & 2.22 absolutely astounding films. I love them to pieces. Akira. Enough said. Ghost in the Shell, another one of the best-known and best-loved anime films. Origin Spirits of the Past, a great film that balances story and action really well. I could go on. Sure, Ghost in the Shell and Akira are years before anime became decently popular in the western world but they had re-releases to Blu-Ray that they could have had shown in the cinema. Anime films are not short of their famous voice-overs either. Patrick Stuart has done voice-overs for Steam Boy, Nausicaa, Ponyo and Tales from Earthsea. Hugo Weaving also had a voice-over for a main character in Tales from Earthsea. That's just off of the top of my head and I don't watch that many anime films (I'm more of a series person).

Re: Underrated movies
Not sure if it's underrated but it's not that popular in Italy, Drunken Master 1 & 2 (The Legend of the Drunken Master), I always liked them, even though they were dubbed it was still funny and exciting.

Interstate 60: Episodes of the Road (2002) - IMDb Also a movie that left me with a lifetime long impression: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0345061/ and last, but by NO means least: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475723/ |

Re: Underrated movies
Hmm that's a really tough list to come up with, somewhere between cult classics and movies people didn't bother to see lies a few underrated gems such as:
Black Dynamite Undisputed II The Other Guys Millers Crossing Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut) Waterworld Open Range

Re: Underrated movies
I don't know about brilliant movie but Kurt Russels acting in Soldier went most critics by.
Yeah, Constantine. Liked everything about it and it was just scary enough. Syriana. Some called it pretentious. I admit having to see it twice to really "get" it. Nick of Time - What can a bunch of kidnappers push you to do in 90 minutes, when you're not Arnold? |

X2 for Waterworld........ The last movie I saw in a theater (Yes when it first came out) Most people didn't get it, they were expecting something else.

Re: Underrated movies
Equilibrium???? Seriously???? Awful. I like turn your brain of stuff as much as the next guy but man, hated that.
Trying to think out of the box on some movies that aren't immediately obvious I would say 2 good ones to start with would be Midnight In The Garden Of Good and Evil (Clint Eastwood directed, way better than some of the more recent stuff that was considered Oscar worthy) High Fidelity (A movie that pretty much every guy can relate to, which makes it good. Didnt like the choice of main actress but otherwise everything I had hoped they could do to make a decent movie version of the book). And because i feel strange suggesting 2 John Cusack movies (completely by chance!) a lot of people say Vanilla Sky isn't good (the original spanish version is better etc) but I thought it was great. Loved the visual style of the movie. What I would say about the 3 is that the less you read about them in advance the better... and don't be expecting a lot of action from them though but do give them your full attention. |

Re: Underrated movies
Cube or the cube series (the first is the most interesting though specially considering it's age...)
Cube (1997) - IMDb One i think that i find odd that most people don't know about or even "heard" of is Pitch Black, great movie... and it's essentially the prequel to Chronicles of Riddick which provided you watc hthe "orginally intended" Extended directors cut, is a brilliant and excellent movie. The movie version for theaters kinda pissed me off with all the missing scenes that just make the movie ten fold better and allows the movie to make more sense. Without those scenes, it's just puts to many plot holes in it. Pitch Black (2000) - IMDb The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) - IMDb I just hope that the "sequel" to chronicles of riddick...... :To underverse.... actually gets made ..... the wiki details are a little unsettlings though so who knows.
