After thinking more about your thread I did think of one guy fitting the 'guitar hero' mold, Jerry Joseph (his current band is the Jackmormons). Unfortunately, his albums are quite subtle, so you need to hear a live show to really experience his skills, power & soul.

jackmormons in telluride colorado, closer I think, but honestly I don't have a BMW or a Ford Explorer, will hard to blend in, haha..

He has produced some really good stuff and played with the likes of Ian Drury of the Cult, but he produces for the most part now...
