Yeah, I've thought of that, me and a friend just found out we're not able to use chat in the bottom left, he's not using a gmail email address, I am. That could very well be the reason why. It's still in beta after all.

Make sure you have chat enabled for the circles your both in, same for him, next to the chat title there's a small arrow that appears when you hover click Circles, and tick the circles you wish to have chat available to. I use a non google email and can chat with anyone.

ah, i just looked at it, and chat was by default turned off on all my circles
looks like you may have to manually turn it on to use it

The email address doesn't matter, as long as they have an active + account.

It sounds to me like your daughter hasn't added you to a circle yet.

Click on the Circles icon near the top to view your circles in detail, and then choose the "People who've added you" this will tell you if your daughter has added you to a circle or not. Then we can take it from there.

Yeah I've got Friends checked in Circles for chat, and he does too or supposedly does, he's not too good with computers so we just started a hang out and video chatted. Unfortunately he's in another country or I'd have just gone to his place and checked things out.

Yes, so far, only my dau and son have added me to their Circle. And, when I hover over their icon, it does show "Family" as the circle.

What we may need to find out is whether my dau has actually posted anything in the Family Circle or if hers is in a completely different circle. The reason I'm mentioning this is that none of the people who have responded there are any of our family members. So, how would I determine just what Circle she's posting in? Again, if it's something like a Co-Workers Circle, why am I able to see and post there at all?

You won't know what circle your daughter has placed you in, simply that she has placed you in one. You won't be able to determine just who she's sharing it with. Just know if you can see it then it's either public or shared with your circle. Try visiting her profile from a browser where you're not logged in to G+ this will show you whether the posts are public or not.

So it sounds like you are at least in her circles. That means any content you see is because she has either made it public or shared it to the circle she has placed you in. If you're seeing co-worker content etc then she may have shared the same post to more than one circle.

Have any of you found that the search engine is rubbish for looking for people? I searched for this one guy I knew was on Google+ but it couldn't find him, he ended up having to add me first instead. Maybe they haven't finished it yesterday or it depends on Google bots and if the bots haven't got to the page of the person you're looking for yet and brought back that URL you'll never find him/her.
