Don't they make decent Office/Computer chairs anymore?
So I've been without my trusty computer chair that i broke oh about 3 years ago, the one that lasted 12 years before it's steel reinforced legs all snapped apart.
Long story short, I got a chair from staples, but it only lasted about 8 hours before the suckers arms that support the back all snapped and well... kill the chair in a hurry. I'm by no means overweight really, muscle heavy mostly some would say, but 6 foot and averaging between 200-250lbs. Not light by any means. (haven't checked what my current weight is, but the last time i checked i was 235lbs). I can't seem to find any low/mid-back office chairs that are at least use a Steel or some form of metal reinforced back, either they are ungodly terrible/uncomfortable or just poorly designed plastic hunks of crap that hold the back in place, or they use plastic armrests that are also not reinforced to hold it. Jebus, they put all these steel parts and crap into the seats and the back for the bolts to go into and they are reinforced very well, but the pain pieces taking frequent stress are just plastic with no bushings or anything at all, just weakened plastic due to putting a 2/3 depth hole in it just so we can slap a cover/cap on it to make it look prettier (at the same time reducing the strength of the plastic by 3x. I can't use a highback which apparently most of all the chairs actually use some form of steel in their setups. Even if they initially feel comfortable, i get incredibly sore after only a half our of use. Still searching, and my options are limited due to many of the products being "US ONLY" which is damn irritating.

they must have some sturdy chairs that are used by professionals who have to sit on office chairs for a living.. maybe step into one of those offices and ask them?

Re: Don't they make decent Office/Computer chairs anymore?
About 250lbs is overweight. Really. YEs you can lie to yourself you are not, but you are lying. Really. And how they keep breaking up on you, another big sign.
I do agree with you about the chairs though. They suck and they feel like toys. I remember buying a 200 GBP chair a few years ago and in a couple of months the left rest just broke, after a couple more months one of the wheels (5 wheels on the bottom) broke, but thankfully the other 4 wheels, with a bit of effort not moving too much, held on their own for another 8 months. However, I am kind of like The Thing from the Fantastic 4, so it's not that weird after all. Still, annoying. But, there are worse things than chairs. Have you seen how flimsy beds are? They are a joke. I remember even as a teen when I was not overweight, and having an iron/steel frame bed, and it broke at the joints. I mean...COME ON! Have you tried sofa chairs? You should try to get one of those 500+ executive chairs, those with real leather on them. They tend to be better built.

Re: Don't they make decent Office/Computer chairs anymore?
Sounds like you likely are needing a "metal secretary's chair". I did Google that and came up with this...
pu leather secretary chair (J-B040) products, buy pu leather secretary chair (J-B040) products from alibaba.com That company seems to have a wide variety of selections to look at and they do seem to allow ordering online. Whether they ship to where you are, only you can determine that. I just recently acquired a new high-back chair for myself and gave my previous one....which is still in excellent shape after about 9 years of use...to my older son who probably is about your size and weight. It's holding up well for him. |

I don't believe I've ever hit 250lbs, ever..... but my heaviest i'm aware of is 245 after the long winter.. (spring weight). Usually going into the winter i'm down to the 220 mark. Prime or Ideal weight for me is usually 210 though. Though if you want to use North american, or World Wide suggest "minimum and maximum" weight values, supposedly 180-190lbs should be my absolute limit borderline "overweight" and low values are 150lbs for being 6 ft.... But those figures are pretty unreasonable for my living conditions. They disregard built types mostly and the don't factor in work conditions. Sure if all i was doing was flipping burgers or working in a office cubical day in and day out, yeah... I'd be all flabby tabby..... But i don't, physical labour is involved, and considering the fact that muscle outweighs fat... Actually talking to a modern doctor recently graduated said i was obese without knowing my fat to muscle ratio just because of my weight and what is "books" told him. Surfice it to say, i apparently don't fall within the "norms" let alone the typical charts, which after some other "tests" determines my weight to be slightly above normal "atm" for my size/height/weight. Everyone is different, My father is granted quite heavy, considered "fat".... and we share almost the same weight, yet for anyone looking at us would swear i was considerably lighter. Actually some people slightly shorter than me and "think" they are the same weight are incredibly surprised when they find out i'm 50-60 lbs heavier. And for anyone that knows anything about how that in fact does make sense, have made the comment that they would prefer to never have to wrestle with me. lol I just don't get why they would make a chair where many of the stress points are made out of bloody plastic without any reinforcements. They design the sucker to fail... I could probably make some barbaric looking metal replacement parts... but i shouldn't need to do that. I'm currently sitting in a low back chair, it's about 35 years old i think.... likely more.... And aside from a single bolt falling out a year ago, which i replaced, this thing is rock solid....

Re: Don't they make decent Office/Computer chairs anymore?
will do.... still hunting..
can't do much due to still harvesting.... so i haven't made a trip to the city for quite some time for anything... I do plan to get a new desk and such for my entertainment setup... as i'll be moving stuff around to suit and upgrading my audio system in the process... but that all depends on the harvest and dollar values for the crop we take off... We'll see

Re: Don't they make decent Office/Computer chairs anymore?
I don't get it I got fat a few years back and went above 270lbs yet my $99 chair never had issues. My cat scratched it up so I bought the same chair on sale at XS Cargo where my 175lb self sits at about the same comfort level. It's a high back chair which you don't want but maybe you could slap a back pad on it and it would be fine.

Re: Don't they make decent Office/Computer chairs anymore?
News......
So after getting my money back about a week+ ago.... i stopped personally by staples and checked out the rest of the chairs to be surprised to see that almost every single one of their chairs they had in stock even the 300+ dollar ones mostly used nothing but plastic and just terrible designed chairs in my opinion.... some were pretty complex contraptions for the back support... which seemed to be a little rediculious considering how simple a chair really needs to be. Anyways... surfice it to say i wasn't all that impressed. I made my way to Costco and was pleasantly surprised to see a chair that they had.... all relatively thick steel, everything was made of steel, armrests and the back support... nothing was aluminum or whatever.... real heavy nice stuff... the chair isn't exactly light.. but not to heavy either. Picked up 2 of them for good measure, bought the 2 for the same price as the one from staples. I've been putting it through the paces and the suckers comfortable.. moreso than the one from staples... it's just as easy to assemble... they used heavier bolts too where it was needed... lets see how this chair holds up.. I also got a bit of a surprise yesterday too.. I received a Email from Staples headquarters inquiring more about the chair i had used after i submitted my review of it on the website. They said they were pleased to read such an indepth review and were also pleased to get feedback on perhaps the chair could have been better. Apparently the chair i got is a joint effort between staples and the manufacturer... Anyways long story short, they asked if they could get the chair back, at which point i informed them of the store i purchased/returned it to, to talk to the manager of the store as they dealt with the chair ordeal directly.. and let me know if they would like any additional information. Wasn't expecting that.

Re: Don't they make decent Office/Computer chairs anymore?
Update...
I've been sitting and playing and spinning in circles when i had the moment on both of these chairs.. i unboxed the other one and am using it at my store during the day, so now i'm averaging about 8 hours a day per day that harvest is basically complete. Leaning back, lounging in the chairs... etc. rock solid. Now i tried to go online to find this specific chair but i'm coming up at a loss. The closest thing i can find is this True Innovations Sport Mesh Mid Back Chair 40 14 H x 24 34 W x 26 34 D GrayBlack by Office Depot looks like maybe this specific chair I've got is Canadian only? Even browsing Costco's website doesn't seem to net me anything worth mentioning. anyways.. like i said.. got 2 for the price they were selling those hunk of crap staples ones for.

Perhaps you need to custom build one, may I suggest something with more rigid back support?

I hope no-one minds but my business has stock of a Titan Heavy Duty Chair, it has a weight tolerance of 27 stone (378 pounds) and is designed for 24 hour usage (so its gonna be great for long hours of gaming!)
If anyone wants a look-see let me know and I will post a link to my site (I haven't done so now as I do not wish to look like a linkspammer!) |
