I just set up a new firewall on my Network this weekend and let me tell you, this thing is awesome!! Makes a Linksys Firewall look like a kids toy. The cool part is the software is free for home users. All you need is an old PC with 2 NICS and the software and you are set. A little knowledge on networking helps to since you have to set the firewall up. EVERYTHING is locked down from the start. You have to open the stuff up you need but once you do you have a TRUE firewall.
The prog is made by a company in Germany and is built on Linux. You don't have to have ANY knowledge of Linux to use this. It practically sets the OS up all by itself. Go to Astaro to get this software. You have to register to get the free lic. (free for home users). The only limiting factor to the Home Lic is that you can only have 10 IP's access the internet at one time and you are limited to 3 NIC's in your firewall. Their are a few other small things that you don't get but you don't need them. I highly recomend this to anyone who wants a true firewall on their network!!

Well the biggest thing with running a firewall like this is the logging capabilities. It logs all activity down to the second. That way you can back trace any problems that may occur. It will also e-mail alert you to any possible problems such as port scanning. I have it set up so that it pages me with any problems. Also a firewall such as this can be defined much more precise then a router/firewall like the Linksys or D:Link (this just replaced my Linksys). I can route information to the correct mach. with a firewall like this and filter the info better. Heck with the add-on package you can virus scan all e-mail that passes through the firewall so any viruses never get to your network. This firewall also has built in VPN serving capabilities and several Proxie servers built in. Yes this firewall is overkill for the standard home user. But if you are a "Geek" like me and have many servers on your network and/or many services that access the internet this is the way to go. Just easier to operate and much more flexible for mid-large networks.
