The end of an era...
I can recall the winter of 1979, onboard a gator frieghter, inport Yokosuka Japan, we all put our civies on and went off base, it was Dodge city, we had high hopes, high hormones and lots of cash. We spent all night on the Ginza, girls, booze and good times, and we took pictures, we held womens breasts, we spilled beer, lots and lots of beer. we fought, we cried, we got sick and we lied, but we were all brothers under the roof of the bordello bar. I remember so well. Tonight, I think of the brave men that have come and gone, my brothers, my friends and my family.
Today the tore down the last bar on the strip. no more girls for a paycheck, no beers on their hip. the vertical landscape took over today, not a word passed my lips. But I think of the men, dressed in khaki's and green. we had high hopes and we were phony tough and make believe mean. we had hormones and cash and lustful dreams. I raise a toast to the men who were few, the proud and the brave, now there are only two..a young sailor and his marine Beruit, Mogadishu, Kuwait and Iraq. we all left with the knowledge... that some wouldn't come back.. but a far better fate, is for those that have gone now only two of twenty two, are left to sing this song... From the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli.. Goodby my brothers in arms...and I remember you...tonight remember me... I will raise a toast to the fallen and to the living and remember when their were just three....
