Default Post So I cant delete a file...

I've posted this in another forum at TweakXP and didnt get much of a response. I'll give this place a shot at It. So my friend was over a while ago and was downloading some stuff to put on a CD. When he left I was deleting the stuff he downloaded to safe space and then WHAM...this file could not be deleted! There is one file that does not delete, I'm pretty sure he thought the file was something else because the name of the file has about 20 words in it (more than windows allows you to type) and thier all a bit "dirty". I've tried deleting it in safe mode but it still wont. Any suggestions. Oh Yea its a little .bmp file but no picture when you open it just says "No Preview Available". So anyone wanna take a stab?

boot to dos and delete it, or just have scandisk fix the invalid filename.

How would I delete it in DOS when I'm using XP? I tired deleting it in Safe Mode but that didnt work. And in the command prompt what would I type if the files is located in C:\Program Files\KaZaA Lite\My Shared Folder?

well, make sure you move all other .bmp files out of there, and delete *.bmp. ( C:\PROGRA~1\KAZAAL~1\MYSHAR~1>del *.bmp )

if that doesn't work, you can make a boot disk with ntldr and a few more system files (i only made 1 disk, and i've forgotten which files already ) and delete it without even starting windows.

if that doesn't work, run scandisk to validate the filename, then you can delete it normally.

Right click the file and go to properties. make sure "read only' is not checked. Right click the folder and click properties. Do the same. Try deleting once more.

If you have a FAT32 partition, just make a bootdisk and delete it.
If you have an NTFS partition, deleting the file will be much more complicated than just using a boot disk. You will have to boot with your windows xp cd (make sure to put cd as the first boot device in bios). Once you do that, just follow the directions until it tells you to press a certain key to "repair" stuff (something like that). Then, you will be allowed to move around in the ntfs partition and delete stuff (and you don't even have to deal with the rule in which you have to put a "~" after a few letters...instead, you can just put long paths in quotes). Anyway, you can eventually find the file and delete it.

Yeah, my instructions are a bit sketchy, but I haven't done this in a long time, so I don't remember very well. Also, if the thing you are trying to delete just happens to be called something similar to "BDE Player," email or PM me and I'll show you how to delete it .

This reminds me of a "trick" some worm coders / crackers use to make file or folders undeletable in Windows. This one being in Kazaa's shared folder WOULD worry me at most... Anyway, there is some information on that link, you might want to take a look as well...

Default Post Undeletable files=BAD!

I don't know XP all that well yet, but I'll agree with the previous post. Reappearing files or files that can't be deleted are usually indicative of an infected system.

As for how to get rid of it...just boot into your 98se partition, boot into DOS, AND NUKE THE SH*T OUT OF THAT PUPPY!!!! (And people laugh at me because I stubbornly stick with 98se. )

Most of the time it's because the filesystem has fscked up and the file's tagged wrong so you can't delete it

I got it removed thanks to someone at the TweakXP forum. I had to delete it through the command prompt. But now it is all gone! Thanks to everyone here who tried helping me.
