I'm all for it. No, this doesn't hurt. Otherwise, jellyfish would not be able to live without pain.... but then again, jellyfish do have a microscopic brain
... but anyway, there are no pain hormones/chemicals/etc released as a result of ultraviolet radiation, so there's no way that it could hurt the fish. The glowing, you could say, has become their natural self.

If it hurt, the scientists would spot this and would then not produce the fish. In any case, the gene for glowing probably already exists in the fish they are to modify, its just a case of switching that particular gene 'on'

I think all this thing about tampering with god's work is pathetic - if we were not meant to do it - then why would he let us? (I'm atheist btw)

But I do agree with you about the tampering with gods work argument. Just think one day they may find out what cause's cancer, or retardation or any number of things. And they can get rid of it before the baby is born. I'm all for stuff like that. But what I am against is making a fish glow to sell in pet shops There not doing it to help any one but there self's. There changing an creatures natural state for monetary cain, and to me that is wrong. ![]() Quote:
You may be right about how they did it, And it might not hurt them at all. I don't know..... But that just it, how would anyone know if they hurt or not? But I'd bet you my last dollar that the scientists could care less one way or the other.

Also, I disagree very strongly with every one of you who says that scientists don't care about the subject! Ethics is front and foremost on the minds of all legitimate scientists doing genetics work. What makes you guys think that scientists don't care?

I think I'm gonna get one and figure out how to keep a (small) fishtank in my computer, I already have UV lights glowing in there.

Zebra fish poop too much. I wouldn't want it. I used to have some. Those fish really know how to destroy a clean tank.

What I would really like to see are bio-luminesant fish - the ones that actually make their own light. The don't need a lightsource of any kind cos the light actually comes from them. Like the wierd creatures that live in the deep oceans where there is no light.
Now that would look cool in a tank. |

Exactly what I was thinking of. Couldn't remember what they were called but know what they look like.
I spent an entire summer about 5-6 years ago absolutley blown away by these creatures - the way the light and colours appear to ripple across them. |

All I can say is $5 is damn cheap for a glow in the dark fish, methinks of adding it into a watercooling resevoir and PC with UV CC, now THAT would be evil.
