I need help QUICK
I need to backup everything in Outlook express...... and import it later...
Need to be able to do this as simple as possible.... quick... easy..... and without shelling out any money..... I know of OUTLOOK EXPRESS BACKUP WIZARD... but for some reason, it says my 30 day period is up.... but... i can't find any registry entries that would possibly explain this... let alone anything to do with it..... I know that program did the job excellently... I need a similare program....

Can you not use the Export option for now to save everything as a file and then Import it when you do what you're wanting/needing to do? That's how I handle it.

.....will the export thinging actually work.... as it exports to either a TXT or some kind of weird file... and last time i checked.. the import doesn't work that same way.....

Yeah id like to know how to do this too, I have some old email folders from my dads email account that I'd like to put in his new email account (2nd computer). I've done it before manually on this computer but for some reason when I paste the .dbx files or whatever they are into his new Outlook directory they dont show up in Outlook Express.
If ya catch my drift

EDIT: OE exports messages to a .csv file. Not .pst as stated above. This is a correction edit.

To make sure it's all working, just export the items and then run the Import option to make sure it recognizes what you just exported. Sorry about the misinformation above. OE doesn't do the .pst file type thing. |

based on MVP-Doug Knox.
some changes made by me, no original nor link. Registry backups is for all Settings, e-Mail Store folder is your original msg body and all. To Backup and Restore Your OE Mail, News and Settings, Address Book and IE Favs. Your safest bet is to move the OE Mail Store to a new folder, on a different partition, if available and export a few Registry keys to back up all your settings. 1) In Outlook Express, go to Tools, Options, Maintenance. Select the Store Folder button. Change the location of the OE Mail and News store folder to a drive/partition/folder that will not be affected by the uninstall or re-install. This is especially true if you plan to reformat the system drive. You will be prompted to log off/back on, or reboot, do so. (after you've created a new e-mail store folder -- make an additional 2-3 backups in zip/rar formatted just incase) 2) Do a Find on *.wab (your Address Book backups) and copy all WAB files to a folder on the same drive/partition you used in Step 1. (you can also use Export in OE6 to make another backup/copy for your Address Book) 3) Open Regedit and go to.. (HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER) HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\Wab File Name Modify the value to point to the folder you copied your WAB file to. (check with me on this if you are not sure...) NOTE: If you only have one available partition, complete steps 1 through 3. Then backup the contents of the folder(s) that you moved the Mail Store and WAB files to. This can be to floppy media, CR-R/RW or whatever you prefer. 4) Now "Export" the following 4 Registry keys to a location that will be available after your reinstall, or whatever (save these Reg files in the same folder of step 1.). HKCU\Identities HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\Wab File Name 5) For IE Favs... you know how to do it with Export/Import functions in IE. (only you might consider to Export and store it in the same folder in step 1. another way is to move the Fav folder to a new location). ---To Restore (or to restore at after you've Uninstall XP and/or reinstall XP.) --- NOTE: **DO NOT open Outlook Express until you completed this procedure** 6) Recreate the folder(s) you used in steps 1 and 2, making sure the path is the same. NOTE: If you were required to backup your Mail and WAB files to other media, you can restore them now. 7) Open Regedit and delete the HKCU\Identities key. (R-click on Identities and select Delete) NOTE: you've exported/backups ttl of 4 Registry keys but you only need to delete 1 Registry key. 8) Locate the 4 REG files you exported in Step 3 and import them into the Registry. 9) Open OE and enjoy. NOTE: Your passwords for mail and news accounts will have to be reentered. These are not saved in the Registry. for all these should take less than 5 mins. not for the 1st time tho.

thanks ever so much, I have turfed years of old emails because of not having the right tools to backup OE in the past
![]() 1 question though..... In the past I have made copies of the store folder and burned them off to a cd.....when trying to import the date I get errors regarding no valid OE folders or something along those lines......yet if I move the data from the cd to a partition it is able to import the old info.....is it due to the cd storing data in read only ?? |

you'll have to change the location of the OE mail/news "Store Folder..."... see step 1. for example... from... C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express <--- Defalut/orinal store folder/location to... F:\StoreMyEmail <--- new Store Folder/new location. if you like to backup the folder (StoreMyEmail) onto CDs you can do so, but when restoring you'll need to recreate the folder ... see step 6. then transfer all contents in the backup from CD to HDD... for this example its F:\StoreMyEmail. <-- recreate folder or the folder is already there (since you dont have to put it in CD), so in the case of reinstall/new install, make sure it use the same path --->F:\StoreMyEmail before importing registry.

..... i got a question, What if i don't need to backup the identities... (i can just create the account normally, and import just the adress books... and e-mail that has been saved).... do i still need to go through that entire procedure.... (cause i really don't like to do anything in the registry if i don't need to)

you mean like changing the email store location only for backing up,
not with this method, you cant just restore the msg only without restoring those registry, all msgs is gone as soon as you open the OE. |

Well, my sister (which i'm trying to backup her stuff)..... brought up a neato idea...... she figured if she sent herself all the messeges she has (which is probably 25ish) and then i backup her adress book..... reformat.... install..... setup her account.... she should have all the e-mails she sent.... suddenly be recieved..... little work... but i think it might be a tad be easier..... Thanks for your assistance... and your offer to help me out....

anytime.
you can always save some important msg like software registration or whatever in .eml format (OE ->File/Save as..) let you know just to make sure you do that for those mails

no reg changing.... simply forwarded what e-mails we wanted to keep... to herself.... then backuped the adress book... then went into "TOOLS>ACCOUNTS" and selected her account.... hit export...... reformatted..... isntalled...... imported account..... imported adress book... hit the SEND/RECIVE... and volla... all e-mails back.... (of course, wouldn't recommend the e-mail idea if your sending large e-mails on a slow internet connection)

i thought so, since you dont like to do anything in registry
...the method and for those backing up/restoring registry setting are good for user who has big amount of mails/many accouts also good for sharing OE over multiple windows OSes on the same system and /or for sharing OE & Address Book among users in XP. |

yeah...... i didn't think i should touch the registry for this kind of small job..... considering it as only maybe 15 e-mails..... That, and the machine is very unstable suddenly...... i think i have the via 4.50 drivers to blame......
