'Master' and 'slave' computer labels unacceptable"

Ready for a good laugh? Here it is:

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Los Angeles officials have asked that manufacturers, suppliers and contractors stop using the terms "master" and "slave" on computer equipment, saying such terms are unacceptable and offensive.

The request -- which has some suppliers furious and others busy re-labeling components -- came after an unidentified worker spotted a videotape machine carrying devices labeled "master" and "slave" and filed a discrimination complaint with the county's Office of Affirmative Action Compliance.

In the computer industry, "master" and "slave" are used to refer to primary and secondary hard disk drives. The terms are also used in other industries.

"Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label," Joe Sandoval, division manager of purchasing and contract services, said in a memo sent to County vendors.

Today my DVD drive (slave of the CD-RW) stopped working and requested to be freed wich I rejected.

I wonder if the ONU has something to say about that... Im worried...

Meanwhile my HD was whining because he own no slave at all!!!

Some people deserve REAL problems so they stop making such petitions... really...

all i can add to this is who ever things things like this should be banned should live a little and stop worrying about what you can not say do or anything that is taken well out of concept of the meaning.

like for instance here in the uk schools you can't sing the age old nursery rhyme "ba ba black sheep" as it's stated as being racist.

no disrespect to any of your comments above,there are some good points but there is limits to how far that sort of bull goes.

Well, I think there's no need for apologies johny: It IS laughable and anyone with half brain will laugh with that.

They used "master" and "slave" for a good reason that has nothing to do with racism but I guess you need at least half brain to be able to separate one from the other.

Too much spare time in hands of those with too little brain leads to such nonsenses...

BTW I think Im going to buy an slave for my HD
