Unless one runs a hardware store or review site, I don't think that's a good deal for many people.

So I applied AS5 yesturday to replace my radio shack grease. I know it still didn't fully "burn in" but my temps are just 1C lower...... Talk about overrated grease. I've user ASIII before.. And all I gotta say is overrated.

Try ceramique- It worked better for me than AS3- and it's safe. I got a higher OC with it on my 9700pro and a higher OC with lower temps with it on my old ass Palamino. (all same room temps and coolers) It definitely is better than white gunk when applied properly. I couldn't believe the difference. Its' about as cheap as white goop at BestByte too.

http://www.bestbyte.net/Product.cfm?...yID=7&Keyword= -$3.99

http://www.bestbyte.net/Product.cfm?...yID=7&Keyword= -$7.50

AS5 is pretty inexpensive there too.

Steel wool after the 2000 grit step is a good way to do that.

I've never tried it personally but heard many people say they did and got good results. A cloth? How long would that take by hand? Maybe with a power buffer or something.

...ew... steel wool is a bad idea.... it's like grit 25.... .and completely eregular..... I worked with a metal lathe and a bunch of different metal related sand pappers.... steel wool is not something that be used on metal for the getting a good smooth shine out of it....

see BWX steel wool is great for wood working
not for lapping

acutaully only a couple minutes asuming you lapped it to 2000 grit first and if you uses a power buffer or something then why bother lapping as it will wear away unevenly. the whole point is a super flat super smooth surface. should look like mirror when your done

When I lap my sinks I actually use a piece of 3/4'' MDF with a mirror on top, then go through the motions with isoproply and wet sand it. I just never took the extra step to get the "mirror" finish. It's funny that I've read at least 5 website "how-to's" that say to use some kind of steel wool for the mirror shine at the end. I wonder why so many people say that?

......Steel wool is usually used for a soft finish on some wood after being stained..... it may feel smoother.... but it's because it "creates" small sorta slivers..... gives it the fluffy smooth feel..... For the smoothest possible shiny mirror kind of finish... i had some of this carbon based metal sand paper.... it was like 4000-6000 grit.... on a metal lathe at 900RPM... you could shine something up in no time.... using it by hand on a heatsink... would probably take ages... but the neat feeling of seeing this stuff work.... is really nice.....

80g of AS3 ? What kind of an idiot would buy that much AS3, my tiny bottle of AS3 has lasted me like 7 months and I've made 7 computers since then, plus I've put that AS3 on one heatsink like 4 times, and I put it on my GPU like 3 times.

Retarded. And I'd like to lap my SLK-900(A) soon, anybody suggest any tutorials, like just using sandpaper, or using alcohol with the sandpaper?

If you go throught all the trouble to lap why wouldn't you use something that is meant for those smooth surfaces, like PCM+ it works better then AS on the smooth surfaces like that because the silver particles keep the 2 surfaces from making good thermal interface. PCM+ makes the thinest possible layer of thermal compound so it will not insulate

And tell me this. After I reapply AS5 and lap my heatsink and gain three freaking degrees will I be any happier? Hell no. I'll feel like I waste my time. 43C underload at 1.75v is fine for me. I'm just stating that the AS5 I put on is only 2C better than radio shack grease. Talk about overrated. Man, where's Digi when I need him to back me up.

radio shack grease sux even compaird to as3. the quality...the temps etc...

thats good but I enjoy my 30C full load useing only AS3 but i'm not overclocked and i'm useing a quiet fan not an overclockers fan at the moment.

btw: a good lapped heatsink can make more differance than in the differance of compound your useing!
but as3/5 shines through with a lapping....and proper application of as3/5

But still, why not spend 5 dollars and get some ceramique or something? I mean you pay 1000's for your PC, then put lowest dollar stuff on CPU- it's like putting generic oil in your $20,000 new car- just doesn't make much since, not worth the risk. I used that white goop and it bled all over and didn't cool near as good as AC3 or ASC- I actually dropped about 7 degrees when I switched from white goop 2 years ago- That's on a Palamino that runs pretty hot though.
