Captain Kangaroo, Bob Keeshan, dies at 76

"MONTPELIER, Vt. - Bob Keeshan, who gently entertained and educated generations of children as television's walrus-mustachioed Captain Kangaroo, died Friday at 76.

By CHRISTOPHER GRAFF, Associated Press Writer"

Details here

Many of us grew up watching the Captain, Mr. Green Jeans, Tom Terrific, and so many other characters. Those of the 'younger' generation may not realize the impact the Captain had on many of the later 'children's shows' that came along. But, his influence was enormous.

He'll be greatly missed.

Very Sad news indeed

This is the second man to die this week that left me with so many happy childhood memories. The first being Ray Rayner. I just adored him as Oliver O’Oliver .

"The man who entertained generations of Chicago children with Chelveston the Duck, Cuddley Duddley and morning turtle races is dead.

Ray Rayner, who hosted the morning kid show “Ray Rayner and Friends” on WGN for nearly 20 years, and also played clown Oliver O’Oliver on the Bozo Show, died this morning of pneumonia in a hospital in Fort Myers, Fla., where he had been living in retirement, according to his daughter, Christina Miller. He was 84."

I was much more of a Ray Rayner kid, I still got a lifesize Cuddly Duddly doll somewhere. Both will be missed greatly.

Greatly missed indeed.

You could see the love for the children in his face (looking back with 20/20...).

I used to wake up to him every morning and carry a pretend set of keys around (his keys on a big ring) while the opening music played and put them on a hook (like he did) on the side of a desk right when he did to made the music stop.

I guess this (the passing of Capt. Kangaroo) touches me considerably more than our younger members because I'm likely one of the oldest members here. I actually recall the premiere episodes of the show back in 1955.

I even convinced my mom to order the special 'film' that was offered by the show that was used to place over the TV screen so that we kids could trace a drawing that was being done during the program. (This, of course, became abandoned once it was discovered that we shouldn't sit so close to the TV screen during programs.)

And, we were always encouraged to 'put on [our] thinking caps' during certain segments. It's a phrase that is still widely used in our society.

The impact of the gentle Capt. Kangaroo was felt by many for over 30 years.

I remember watching him in the early 80's. Sad how life is and that we lose alot of our past. A piece of history has once again passed on.
