EEK! Exposure to low-level magnetic fields damages DNA

SEATTLE (AP) — University of Washington researchers have found that prolonged exposure to low-level magnetic fields like those generated by hair dryers, coffee makers and electric blankets can damage brain-cell DNA.

A new study, to be published in the May edition of Environmental Health Perspectives, found that exposure to a 60-hertz field for 24 hours broke brain-cell DNA strands in rats, and exposure for 48 hours caused even more DNA damage.

well that explains alot lol

but see the thing is you won't see the effects right away it's over time when you end up with something worng or later in life you may die earlyier or something who knows

Quote:
"The UW study suggests the effects are cumulative, meaning duration can be as damaging as intensity. "

"In real life, people get this exposure in brief doses — three minutes of exposure to a blow dryer, five minutes of exposure to an electric razor," Lai said. "We found that this could add up over time."

Lai and Singh hypothesize that rather than causing direct harm, low-level electromagnetic fields spike the amount of free iron within certain cells. That free iron then undergoes a chemical reaction that releases "free radicals" or charged atoms that attack cell structures, including DNA, lipids and proteins
free radicals are very very bad

Quote:
To test that theory, researchers gave some of the rats drugs that either neutralize free radicals or decrease free iron before exposing the animals to the magnetic field.

The experiment supported their hypothesis, showing that the drugs prevented brain-cell DNA damage.
the experiment is sound

Quote:
Cells undergo wear and tear all the time, so DNA damage in and of itself isn't cause for alarm.

It becomes a concern when damage increases, because that increases the likelihood that a mistake will occur in the cellular repair process. That could result in a mutation, which in turn could cause diseases like cancer.

Some types of DNA damage are easily fixed, such as a break on one side of DNA's ladder-like double helix. Repairs become more difficult if both sides of the helix are broken, thus increasing the likelihood of mutation.

Both single- and double-strand breaks were found in the UW study.

so you don't under stand each cell has a blue print inside called dna if they blue print is damaged your end up with mutations. all sorts of cancers, odd illness, organ failure, mulations coulds couse nomal cells to eat on each other like in some nural disorders ...

it could lead to alot of things but basically it gibeing you a one way ticket to a "shorter" life

but think about it you hand is on your mouse how many hours of the day? infront of that monitor or tv? mabe you set next to a power cord? any were current is flowing there is a small field! really think about it? how many people live near power lines? ever hear about cancer clusters accuring a heck of alot more with people that live close to the hevy powerlines? it all makes since

Keep in mind that the test was conducted with continuous exposure to extremely high magnetic fields - I sincerely doubt that any of you will be spending days and days in a MRI.

So what, imagine what marijuana does - and then look at all the people in the world that smoke it 3 times a day and still live to be 80 years old and on....

Yea but what about were they said the damage is cumulative a little exposure here a little exposure there adds up to the same as setting in constant exposure!

There for it is something to think seriously about!

not to mention there is time you by the power co's power lines were you getting bombarted with many times the low level radation used in this test for brief periods. people the live by magor powerlines and an extremly high reporting of cancer/cancer clusters

radation is emitted all over the place you are exosed quite alot if you think of it.

so antime you have had and electric current running near you have been exposed, tv's,vcr's car stero's , boom boxes, razors, trimmers (had a shave or a hair cut lately?),hair dryiers, etc etc etc it'sd all around us

who know the final effect as everything gets more eletronic each day

Sorry to dredge up an old thread but though it better then to create a new one and linking to this one...

There was a new finding mentioned on CNN the other night that the cellular damage is even passed on from generation to generation. So the damage you sustain is passed on when you have kids!!!…

hmm DNA cells in the brain can be damaged without any side-effect… DNA damage only effects cells that reproduce, brain cells generally don't do that
