Two men were surveying some undeveloped land.

They came across a deep natural well and one of them said, "I wonder how deep this hole is?"

The other said, "Let's drop a rock down in it and find out."

So, they grabbed a nearby rock and dropped it into the hole.

They listened and listened and listened and never heard anything.

"That must be a really deep hole. We need a bigger rock," said the first guy.

So, they found a much larger rock and dropped it into the hole.

Again they listened and listened and still didn't hear anything.

"Man! That's a deep hole! We need something really big," said the second guy.

So, they noticed an abandoned railroad crosstie on the edge of the clearing and they each looked at one another in agreement. Each of them grabbed at an end of the crosstie and dragged it to the mouth of the well. Then they went to the other end and lifted it up and let it drop.

As they began to listen, a goat ran right between them and jumped into the hole!

They jumped back in alarm and were scratching their heads when a third guy came walking into the clearing as he looked around the area.

"Hey, guys, have you see a goat?" he asked.

"Well, fact of the matter is we did. One ran right between us here and jumped into this hole," one of the surveyors said.

"Oh, that wouldn't be my goat," the third man said. "MY goat was tied to a crosstie."
