i have not been able to bring up www.betanews.com now for this last week.just want to know if anyone else can access this link.

jb are you using a proxy to access the internet.

If not, your isp is likely to have its own proxy which you should be able to use and that should sort the problem. If you are already using the proxy then try turning it off and see what happens.

My ISP (blueyonder) uses webcache.blueyonder.co.uk port 8080 and If I dont use this then I cant see BWX's sig or hosted images. Works fine with the proxy on though.

It may even be an idea to use the blueyonder proxy if you can. I'm not sure how they have it configured so you may be ok. Otherwise you probably wont get anything if access is restricted to blueyonder customers.

sorry m8 but you have lost me? i have no idea what NTL use.

ntl cable modem connect via a 1394 conection,ethernet cable attached from modem to pc.

how or where would i find out.

the first two..... still nothing

the third 'page can't be found'.

to add also this has only been like this since tuesday 13th april,the day i changed to my new isp.

those should worked with IE only..

that or download a trial program of neo trace or trace route.... there alot of apps tht give you a visual trace route...

Sorry mate, I'll try again.

In IE6 goto Tools->Internet options->Connections->LAN Settings.

At the bottom of the page you will have Proxy Server settings. In here is where you need to enter your proxy server details such as webcache.blueyonder.co.uk on port 8080.

Give it a try. Like I say I can't guarantee that it would work as it may be for blueyonder customers only but its worth a shot. It might be worth looking for NTLs own proxy server. They should have details on their support site.

thanks m8 for that bit of info.

just done some extensive searching through ntl help site as i could not find the info.

so went to do www.ask.com done some searching through there and found it.

cache1-nott.server.ntli.net port 8080. from cableuk,with a list of 8 or so others for backup.

betanews now loads. will be trying others sites to make sure all my other lnks are fine.

my firewall reports alot of probes at most of the time when using some public proxies but you should be safe since its belong to your ISP.

anyway this may work without proxy config and you can try it if you don't want to use proxy..

try adding the next line under the "127.0.0.1 localhost" to your Hosts file (\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts <- edit this file with notepad),

Code:

127.0.0.1  localhost
140.99.102.70  www.betanews.com

before your computer makes a request of the site IP address from your ISP's DNS server then others DNS servers, it will check your system 'Hosts' file first..
so when your browser tried to load the web page, instead of going out to your DNS server, it just takes the one you've given.

you can also add DH to your hosts too if you like.
then try removing your proxy settings from your web browser..
and if it does not work then you can remove or leave the entries in the hosts file.. and redo your the proxy settings..

tried those with out and betanews went back to no access. re-enbled proxy and working again so i think i will be leaving the settings how i have them now as there working.

not sure that will work, i dont have any site that had the DNS lookup prob to test on.. try it anyway since you only have prob with just one site.. and i think your ISP just need an update..
