OEM, im still a little confused..

hey, i read a little about waht OEM means on newegg.com. But im still a little shakey about what it really means. I wanted to buy a Sapphire Radeon 9600XT from newegg, but its OEM instead of RETAIL. From what i read, i know that it has something to do with not having the original box, and some other things. But overall what is the difference between reatail and oem. Is there any performance differences? Thanks a lot.

OEM parts are the same as retail, less the self packaging, and bundled software, etc., OEM is generally made for PC manufacturers; such as Dell. There's no difference in the actual hardware, but there is sometimes a difference in the warranty, retail usually provides three-years, while as OEM might only be thirty-days.

actually I have seen some differences in older and lower end hardware where OEM does have slower clock speeds, but nowadays OEM it's all the same. I never would buy a retail creative card because its stupid. The old rage fury pro had a diff in clock speeds ever so slightly but it wasn't a big deal

I thought there was some controversy of certain ATI cards being clocked lower on OEM?

So check the specifications. Look at the speeds of the Retail and OEM, if they're the same then go for it!

Article's quite old, but I agree, check the clocks, if for nothing less than to just make ^_^ happy.

Re: Re: Re: Re: OEM, im still a little confused..

but also you miss out on free half life 2
and you get a really short warrenty

the for exaomle radeon 64mb vivo's were 183/183 retail 175/175 oem
the new cards don't seen to have that happening... but in early radeon
days thats how it was..

also cards that aren't built by ati its common to use diffrent brans or ram and sometimes slower CAS ram

ati useally ships the boards with faster ram and under clocks it... and if you luckey and check you ram specs from the ram chip maker then you'll find out sometime that higher clock rate... you could then clock you ram to that with out really o/cing the card becouse it's within that chips spec

LOL, then excuse NewEgg's typos as we forgive yours. In either case, the OEM clocks are the same as the retail's.

it's not a cable but an adaptor ...the video part is known as a DVI-TO-CRT adapter

the other common adaptor used for like the tv out is a S-Video to RCA
