Conspiracy theory 1

Security technology company Symantec reported Thursday that it has analyzed what it believes to be the first known threat to 64-bit Windows systems, a virus labeled W64.Rugrat.3344.

With the first First known 64-bit virus threat found

Viruses - truly written by the antivirus companies? - makes sense, right? keeps them all in jobs.

yes it makes sense. it keeps them in jobs, they know the virus and can work on the anti-virus before it is out so they look fast and efficient also being the first to find a 64bit virus cant harm their reputation. however it also makes sense what they say about the hackers and virus makers to want to update aswell so they would be working on it

UberLord will become famous soon enough

There's more of a corrolation between spammers and virus writers .... a lot of viruses seem to have small SMTP engines in them these days ....

That's because most of the source code will be the same - just compiled for 64 bit CPU's. So it would share the same security holes, etc etc.

The Gentoo Linux source code that compiled on my 32-bit VIA 1G processor should also compile on a AMD 64 processor - and it will have all the benefits and deficits of running Linux.....

i dont think norton would be paying geeks to write the viruses, instead i would the geeks working there through their knowledge and resources would develop them for their own mischief

I'm suspect they have had a hand in writing a few but it's too easy to make them.

Not that I’d know how but I used to have several thousand and their source codes as well on a CD. Some those failed to be detected.... I bought them on a 1337/internet security CD at a trade show. Apparently it was part off the stuff that was included. I’ve since them tossed them as they were getting old.

If some one was fluent in C/C+ with such examples I’m sure they could whip something up easy.

That’s not a good thing they make it too easy!
