theres a difference.... very large difference... between projected calculated 5.1-7.1 with stereo output.... and full blown 5.1-7.1 audio..... Trust me... Pro Logic 2 is real nice.... but it just doesn't cut it... and with the new headphones that are starting to show up.... 7.1 surround sound is becoming VERY possible in a very small "headphone" space....

Actually... you'd be serprised what is composed entirely in 7.1 mode... then presented in stereo... as a good stereo system will mix down the 7.1 without justpushing the channels ontop of each other.... they will make the use of a sorta "3D enhanced" mode.... in a pretty well bad attampt and pushing out the rear channels out the the sides the furthest as possible.... still it doesn't make a difference if 2 songs and composed... differently and played back on the same stereo

what do you mean? It is allready!!!!

Moneky audio and FLAC audio compression!!!

they compress lossless and half nearly the file size of the wav file. so you have have a whole cd compressed at about 300MB. Doesnt take to long to download 300MB.

haeh?

go on their website and read up on it. they take the wav file and compress it lossless. when you decomprss it its 100% the original wav file. the same. you can just play the file your computer will decompess it on the fly. seeking etc is just as fast as with mp3 (if you have a decent computer of course)

yeah and 300MB is quiete big for 1 album, but at least its not 600MB

but mp3 standart or extreme is very good too. ogg vorbis 6 and 7 is also perfect and so is mpc 6.

I couldn't really tell you the difference between those when doing a blind test.

mpc owns anyway!

well yes, thats how it will be with any format and once you get past q6 with ogg, the channel separation becomes completely transparent from a wav or other uncompressed format. ogg vorbis is reallly nice, the only problem is because it uses compresion as well as lossy tecniques, it uses more battery life..so thats a tradeoff

about minidiscs, sony is geting reading to release their new line of MD players, supposedly better audio quality, still ammazingly long bat. life, and faster xfer from pc (via usb2.0, not only real time anymore)

and about gapless playback...any real "mp3" player you get wont do gapless...because the mp3 format does not support gapless..no matter what, there will always be a gap when using the mp3 format...luckily ogg vorbis might completely take the place of mp3 soon

AFAIK, Rio Karma is the only player that will do gapless with MP3, OGG, FLAC, and WMA.

I rip all my CDs to OGG (though I really should rip to FLAC and transcode to OGG).

no, the karma does gapless ogg, wav, and flac (although i dont know much about flac, i assume it supports gapless). any player using mp3 format WILL NOT be gapless.

why would you rip to flac then transcode? to keep a high quality ref. file on your HDD vs the lossy on the player?

I have to use Mp3's for playing at dances... 320kbps ... if i use WMA/OGG/or other variants (excluding wav).... i get audio anomolies at very very very high Wattage .... amplifiers start picking up errors that wouldn't be noticeable at all before on say a lower 500 watt home stereo or headphones in that fact..... Also, using gapless/song interfades don't work with the other formats correctly.... but that's just limitation as the formats are so widely used as mp3

yea, i think ogg is eventually going to take over the encoded audio area....because it is open source it can be continually developed and never loose its featureset appeale, and it already has higher quality, smaller size, and gapless...

WMA maybe but the anomolies are always there they dont just appear if you use a better amp or more powerful amp. I seriously doubt that statement above concerning OGG has any validity (?).
Visit www.hydrogenaudio.org they can tell you for sure (experts).

OGG wouldn't be so popular if it wasnt for the better audio quality.

.... no they just don't suddenly appear ... IF they weren't there already.... it just so happens that with amplification.... it amplifies the compressions made.... the errors in the music.. you start getting digital squeals and squeaks.... Mp3 is rather quite good with the problem... Ogg has some problems sometimes...... the fact that i'm talking more about different effects applied to the audio formats... mp3 has zilch for problems.. ogg and WMA and various others just either don't support it.. or produce errors...
