Medical Science
My mother suffered a heart attack several days ago, My brother and I rushed home to find my father, a diabetic completely confused and scared. I called 911 and administered oxygen till the ambulance came and reassured my father it would be alright. My father was mute, and my brother had just returned from IRAQ, was also consumed with worry. We all dreaded the worst till I met her doctor, he showed me the laboratory and radialogical evidence and it sounded as if my mother would require open heart surgery to continue living. I waited for what seemed like an eternity and learned that she recieved her heart and arterial repair through an artery in her leg, the entire process only took a few hours and she now has "stints" placed in her heart that completely opened her arteries. Her followup tests confirmed that the procedure actually improved her hearts efficiency since her last physical. After three days in the hospital, my mother is home, cooking, enjoying her family and inisists on shopping as soon as possible. Less than ten years ago, she would have to have undergone a major surgery that she might not have survived, since she is a slight woman. She claims her Scotch Irish ancestry is responsible for her constitution, and her longevity. A surgery and convelesence that would normally have taken months, and cost thousands of dollars was avoided because of a simple procedure, and the skill of the doctor trained in new techniques. I often scoff at medicine, and doctors and the damn bill, but my mother is living proof that many issues can be taken care of in a matter of days, without all the melodrama and expense of the past. Thankgod for modern medicine.

It's good to hear
It's good to hear everything is well with your mother. It's amazing how much we've advanced in modern medicine, but we've still have a long ways to go... Who knows what we'll uncover 50 years from now.
