I am AMD happy. I have not owned an INTEL since my store bought E-Machine 466 Mhz back in the day. I WANT to upgrade to AMD64 chipset but I cannot see any advantages for gamimers...

http://www.gurureview.co.uk/index.ph...1&limitstart=8

AMD 64 desperately needs Windows support to make it... yeah, yeah, I know about Linux and Mac and those guys, but the world of software caters to Windows. I also know that there is a BETA version of the 64 bit Windows OS available for free... wat Up at Microsoft... Free! Shut, that's your wage for the reformatting over and over involved with betas... I digress.

All the multimedia benchmarks that I have seen show 32 bit CPU OUTPERFORMING the 64 bit CPU in gaming! Matter of fact, the AMD 64 bit gives BETTER benchmark scores using 32 bit Windows as OS versus 64 bit! Imagine that!

And HEY, what about 'de fact that we STILL don't have no stinkin' 64 bit games yet! Oh, I know they are on the way, but as of today, ALL my games are 32 bit and for the immediate future they will remain that way.

Plus, I don't know about you but I don't feel like corresponding with Microsoft debuggers for the next 8 months fixing up the 64 bit OS like I did when Windows XP was introduced.

Besides, I have also read that the current trend of STRONG graphics cards offloads SO much of the work from the cpu that the cpu speed becomes less of a factor for us gamers... we would do better to UPGRADE our graphics cards than chase cpu cycles... (I'm assuming that you got a 2.0 Mhz or better processor).

http://www.pctechguide.com/05graphics.htm says quote:

"Graphics processor
The problem has been solved by the introduction of dedicated graphics processing chips on modern graphics cards. Instead of sending a raw screen image across to the frame buffer, the CPU sends a smaller set of drawing instructions, which are interpreted by the graphics card's proprietary driver and executed by the card's on-board processor.

Operations including bitmap transfers and painting, window resizing and repositioning, line drawing, font scaling and polygon drawing can be handled by the card's graphics processor, which is designed to handle these tasks in hardware at far greater speeds than the software running on the system's CPU. The graphics processor then writes the frame data to the frame buffer. As there's less data to transfer, there's less congestion on the system bus, and the PC's CPU workload is greatly reduced."

Also here; http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache...+cpu&hl=en</a>

"With older rendering methods, a major bottleneck in the system could be that data that the video card needs to process is stored somewhere in main memory, and therefore must be fetched by the processor. The maximum bandwidth from the CPU to the GPU is a mere 100 megabytes per second [5]. When all the data needed for the calculation is stored locally on the GPU, this bandwidth increases to 10 gigabytes per second, a one-hundred fold increase [5]. This allows for complex simulations to occur on-card, like the modeling of complicated particle systems including water and other fluids"

Now, to address the question asked here???

My new COMPUTER will be my current one, but it's got one HECK of a graphics card upgrade comin'! I can also boost my multi a point and a half if I gotta' bring the heat!

Jazz

amd 939

I've got better things to do then write a 100 page essay ...

MHz isn't everything

Intel had to resort to "THEFT" just to catch up with amd's 64 bit leap

Short answer AMD.

I build & sell PC systems myself in a local shop where I live. So many times, a customer will come in and want to buy a system for gaming. They state that they have a tight budget like 1000$ or 1200$ Can Tax included. They then proceed with insisting to go with Intel, and end up with a system like a P4 2.8E, 2 X 256MB DDR400 generic type of RAM, 160GB + non native SATA drive (like Maxtor or WD (except Raptors) and to add injury to insult, they finish off with a Radeon 9200 or NVidia FX 5200

With that kind of budget, I can usually have them equipped with a AMD XP 2500 up to 3000, 2 X 512MB DDR 333 or 400 Kingston Value RAM, a 80GB to 120GB WD ATA or 80 to 120 SATA Seagate drive, Radeon 9600/Pro/XT or 5700 up to 5900XT. Sometimes they can squeeze in a 9800 Pro.

At the end of the day, the customer buys what "He" feels like buying, and when they come back to me to complain that something must be wrong with there "Intel" rig cause they get sub par gaming performance, I remind them of the fact that they "insisted" to go Intel and ended up with a vid card suited for "Corporate" environments.

Intel's P4 is not bad at all, it's actually a great CPU, but what I hate most is when someone requests Intel for the wrong reasons.

PS I had to let out some steam !

I have been asking myself this question for the last few weeks. I want the FX 53 939. Also prob Gainwards 6800 Ultra Golden sample. he crasy one that what was announced this week. I dont really need it though. Hell I could get a 20 - 23" widescreen lcd monitor for that much cash.

So someone should just tell me what I should do from these options/

a. Buy an FX-53, 6800 and mobo
Sell my 64 3200, asus mobo and 5950

b. Buy an FX-53, 6800, mobo, that cool case I posted this morning, 2 Western Digital Raptor 10,000
rpm 74GB Hard Drive's that are now available. Keep my water and my pc4000

sell everything without the water and put my OCZ PC3200 back in it.

c. or go buy a bigger lcd and the Western Digita's and wait till fall to upgrade

Over the years I've had both Intel and AMD systems, both have had there good points an bad points
I'm currently runing Intel and have been very pleased with the P4, but what I"l build next will be based on plenty of research and lots of reading of reviews on both. But it won't be any time soon this time around I'm gonna wait till all the new technology is out and see which one works best. I can say I'm dissapointed that Intel has scraped the Tejas cpu,I was kinda liking the sound of that one.

If you wait the prices will fall... There are too many new technologies and standards coming out at all at once. It makes the prices go insane.

If you going to get a 6800 be sure to get an nForce 3 based solutions so that you can at lest take advantage on the new motherboard optimizations they put in.

What did you do with your 3200? Sell it? I am looking for a minor upgrade. Will have some money and not looking to spend 800 on a cpu. My choices are either p4 2.8 or higher or a Athlon 64 3000+ or higher. The Hyper Threading has me leaning towards P4 right now. Will def grab an Athlon 64 though if the price is right, brand new or not.

BTW, I started reading this thread from the begining and realized it is like 2 years old.

My next system (updating motherboard/RAM/CPU on the current rig) will most likely be a A64 one. AMD just feels alot better then Intel, imo they try to push people around like they are the boss blindly relying on people following them without any questioning.
Plus it's cheaper...

i will return to AMD, socket 939 supports dual channel (what i read). 64-bit and the pricing is better.

this pentium 4 is good... but my athlon just seemed faster from the old p1 233, it was a 800mhz athlon.

I guess I will wait untill All the sockets have changed. For now I will get a 6800 and keep my processor untill PciX is attached and maby DDR2. I want to upgrade when a big release hapens and I usually do, but if I upgrade now there will be no stoping me in the fall when PciX is attached to at least Via's chipset. Also SATAl CD/DVD rom drives are gonna start being implemented to. So if I keep this up then I'm gonna go through 3 or 4 mobo's by this time next year.

1 thing though. A friend figures I could sell my rig for $2500.00 and could get it no problem. Is anyone good at figuring what the true value of a pc is? If I could get that much or more I would love to build another from scratch.

BTW Jazz if I just upgrade just my GPU I will sell it to ya if you want. Your the first to asl so I will give you first dibbs.
