Meteor show will reach peak Monday night
One of the year's best meteor showers reaches a peak Monday when, weather permitting, you can expect to see dozens of meteors an hour shooting across the sky.
The Geminid meteors consist of sand-size or smaller bits of dust and rock slashing through the earth's upper atmosphere. As those particles vaporize, we see a brief streak of light: a meteor. The meteor shower is named after the constellation Gemini, the Twins, out of which it appears to radiate. For observers in Arizona, the best time to look for Geminids is from sunset to midnight Monday. Your best bet is to look generally east, about halfway up from the horizon, from dusk to about 9 p.m., and from halfway up to almost overhead from 9 to midnight. Source |
