GIMP is available not only for Windows, but also for Linux and MAC based computers making it the ultimate Photoshop alternative.

Nvu
This program aims to be the “Ultimate substitute to commercial website production software”... rrrright, in other words it’s a Dreamweaver substitute that’s completely free and easy to use. In fact the only challenge i can see with this software is working out how to pronounce the name!

InkScape
Ever used CorelDraw? I have, sadly i regretted it.
Which is why i went and installed InkScape instead, This alternative to Corel comes again with all the same tools and functions you need to get the job done the same way as you would in Corel, but it doesn’t have all the thousands of bugs and instability issues that many people have encountered whilst using Corel. From personal experience, I would definitely go with this over Corel any day. Losing a drawing you’ve worked on for almost 6 hours straight is Not a good way to end the evening.

Joomla!
If you run your own website and are looking for a quick and easy way to take it to the next level why not take a look at Joomla (exclamation is part of the name, perhaps the developer got excited?), Joomla(!) is what’s known as a CMS or Content Management System. Instead of having to re-upload the page you want to update, Joomla saves all your content as “Articles” into a central database which you don’t even need to setup yourself. When the time comes to edit, remove or make a new article you can simply click a link, do what you need to do and save. Boom, new content is live and available for everyone to see instantly with no messing about hunting for files and upload links.

You may find it difficult to setup if you aren’t familiar with FTP (File Transfer Protocol) but you can always ask for a hand on the Joomla forums and they’ll help you straight out.
It can also be installed on your local computer if you’d like to experiment with it.

Mozilla Firefox
Now i’m sure most of you reading this will either already be reading it through Firefox or will have heard of it before, but for those of you who haven’t/aren’t, Firefox is an open source internet browser developed by a rather large developer; Mozilla.
Mozilla have been cranking out versions of Firefox since the cows came home and every single time they’ve just got better and better. Compared to Internet Explorer which is the standard for most people since it comes pre-installed on your copy of windows; it’s faster, safer, more customisable and personally i think the interface is nicer.

It was also the first browser to use Tabs (Viewing multiple pages in one window instead of opening more windows), so if you thought Internet Explorer were doing something new there; think again! If you don’t like Firefox, you could alternative check out Opera, Google Chrome, Netscape and Apple’s Safari browsers.

And there we have it, substitute programs for some of the biggest (and most expensive!) production programs on the market. Now you can not only save money, but help support the open source movement.

Nobody knows any more, as far as i know it was Mozilla (Just Mozilla) but might well be opera.

GNU, the Free Software Foundation, is not a programming language. It is an ideal, an ethos that software should be free AND that the programming code used (of any language) shall be open source, thus the code is available to anyone to decompile, use, change or modify.
