Reggie White, the former Green Bay Packer and Philadelphia Eagle defensive star, died today at the age of 43.
White, whose free-agent signing with the Packers in 1993 altered the NFL landscape, died of respiratory failure due to sleep apnea, according to White's widow, Sara. Sara White spoke this morning with Fox studio co-host James Brown. White's arrival in Green Bay, orchestrated by then-general manager Ron Wolf, proved to be the main defensive ingredient, coupled with quarterback Brett Favre on offense, to the Packers' run to victory in Super Bowl XXXI. Green Bay was upset the following season, 1997, in the Super Bowl by the Denver Broncos. White, whose NFL career began in Philadelphia, played six seasons in Green Bay. He came out of retirement in 2000 to play for the Carolina Panthers. He finished his NFL career with 198 quarterback sacks. He is the only NFL player to have recorded nine consecutive seasons of double-digit sack totals. White, who technically will be eligible for Hall of Fame induction next year, is survived by his wife and two children.

probably steroid use
anyone notice how alot of ~professional~ athletes are dropping dead of heart attacks and cancer in their early 40s lately, just a few years after retirement?
Flojo Ken Camaniti Reggie White Jason Giambi (not dead, but career probably over due to cancer) And there's lots of speculation that Mr USPS has won the Tour de France on the basis of steroid use, and was a contributing factor to his cancer a few years back. I find it hard to believe that someone who is a professional athlete -- their body is their temple, franchise, career -- can go with a congential heart defect or congestive heart failure their whole career without it detected. Mind you, White was a great player for the packers in the 1997 (?) Superbowl.. a great win.

Holy crap, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea 2-3 years back. Don't remember the doc saying it could kill you though. Very sad.

athletes bodies are not their temples. Athletes abuse their bodies in ways that normal people cannot comprehend. I'm just a swimmer(we're pretty kind to our bodies. you have to eat right, eat lots, stretch alot, dont overstrain muscles with weight lifting etc etc) and even I get to the point where I have to call it quits because im abusing myself too much. I've limited myself to the winter and summer seasons just so I can have time to recover. I'm not even freakin professional. think of the pressure these guys feel just to maintain their lifestyle.
