Nasa will launch a spacecraft called Deep Impact

SPACE watchers are in for a bit of a treat. On January 12, Nasa will launch a spacecraft called Deep Impact from Cape Canaveral which, if all goes to plan, will crash into the comet Tempel 1 on July 4.

To those among us whose knowledge of matters astronomical is limited, the importance of such a mission may not be immediately obvious.

But those who understand these things will tell us that enterprises such as this are vital for our understanding of the universe.

Tempel 1, for instance, is believed to have been around since the beginning of time and contain within its frozen mass those very chemicals that led to the production of water, and therefore life, on Earth.
