I have two questions:
1. What is the difference between windows XP Pro, Corp, Home...?? 2. Has anyone ever heard of modem failure due to a bad harddrive???.... |

XP HOME - Designed for home use on SINGLE processor systems only, missing some of the functionallity of PRO... and is incapable of handelling multi-processor systems. XP PRO - Designed for bussiness use, Has more functionality for bussiness applications and the like, Supports multi-processor systems. XP CORP - Corperate edition of XP Pro, and doesn't need to be registered. (there are several other differences, but those seem to be the largest ones.) A2. Failure of a HDD, and a Modem at the same time could be due to a voltage spike... or some other power fluctuation... Such as a power supply failure.

First, Windows XP Home, designed with the home user in mind. XP Home contains the base features for all other versions. Second, Windows XP Pro, which is a superset of XP Home. XP Pro includes many added features, including: Remote desktop support Encrypting File System (EFS) support Complete backup solutions Internet Information Server (IIS) Support for multiple processors Support for multiple languages Remote user support XP Media Center Edition, designed for home media entertainment centers, includes specific support for video recording, playback, storage. All components must be certified for use to function properly. Software not sold as add-on unit currently, and must be purchased with a Media Center PC. XP Tablet PC Edition, designed for use only with Tablet PC's, is also a superset of Windows XP Pro. Added to XP Pro are a range of features specific to tablet PC's, most notably the all-new handwriting recognition software and the EM screen handler (more in the Reviews section tomorrow about this). Like Media Center, Tablet PC Edition will not be sold as an add-on, and won't function unless installed on a tablet. Regarding your second question: No. Hard drive failure will not cause a modem to fail. However: If you specified custom parameters for the modem, and lost your primary drive forcing a re-install, those parameters would need to be re-set, particularly if you are using an older, non-plug-and-play device. There are many other things that CAN cause modem failure, but the most common are line surges and lightning strikes. |
