I forgot to disable the "Messenger" service in Services. That's what lets advertizers do this. All you have to do is go to Start>Run and type in services.msc. Then go to "Messenger", right-click it, select Properties, change "Startup Type" to "Manual" and click the "Stop" button. Click OK. I forgot to do this on this computer and it kind of surprised me just popping up out of nowhere. BTW, disabling the "Messenger" service has no effect on Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger.

System Specs

It's actually a handy feature that has ever been exploited, I get them off and on for a month or so now, pesky kids.

another thing which I like is to completely kill messenger via start, run, "gpedit.msc"

then go to computer configuration, administrative templates, windows components, windows messenger.

right click on do not allow windows messenger to be run... set that to enabled .

then use Trillian/Pro. (and if you ever want to go back just reverse the above, hey presto)

I really have nothing against Messenger itself (I use ad-remover) and I knew about the whole "Messenger" service thing but never had the chance to see it in action because I disabled the service on my computer. But, as you may or may not know, my hard drive got f**ked I'm now using a different computer and that's why it was enabled and it kind of surprised me just popping up like that out of nowhere.

Well, I don't really know if a firewall would work if you had this service enabled and running. It's best to disable it for your own peace of mind.

Sure it would work.

I know for a fact that ZoneAlarm, BlackICE and Outpost take care of this. I did a little test earlier

BTW - Linux users are immune to this kind of blatant spammage
