BEING produced - not IS.

Many vehicles "being produced" at one point never made it to full production.

Do you even know what a "posi" is? It stands for "positive traction" hence the name "positrack". Another name for this is "limited-slip differential". Models are being produced that are electronically controlled and the feature can be enabled and disabled at will. It's also non-functional beyond a certain speed range - the top speed would only be affected by a change to the final drive ratio. The only time the slip limiter engages is when a loss of positive traction is detected, caused by wheelspin.

The use of a positrack rear end on a vehicle will affect time-to-distance in lower-traction conditions, not top-end speeds.

Also, positrack is not very good for cornering, as it forces both wheels to spin at the same speed, which is one of the major improvements in newer Limited Slip, which is computerized to control both wheels independantly.

saying positrack isn't good for cornering is like saying a gunshot to the head is kinda bad for your health.

FYI, euro...most of the supercars employ an electronic slip-limiter to help minimize wheelspin and retain control of the vehicle under heavy acceleration. Doesn't take a supercar to use this system though - my wife's car, a sunfire GT convertible, is also equipped with such a system, and it's far from what would be considered a supercar. In many cases it's referred to as "ETS" or "Enhanced Traction System".

But whether it's the positrack you stuck on that 71 Mustang, or the new ETS running on that Porsche 911 Turbo, the primary purpose is to prevent a loss of control when you stomp on the gas. Older systems did this by locking down both axles and spinning them together, the theory being that while one wheel might spin faster if the surface were slippery, if the same power were applied to both wheels, the spinning wheel would affect the car less. They discovered that this really only worked to distribute the power evenly - it did very little, if anything, to limit slippage. The newer ETS systems work by not only applying power to the non-slipping wheel, but in some cases by reducing engine RPM and lowering the torque applied to the wheels to reduce or eliminate wheelspin. Obviously, power reduction is an undesired thing when you're working on TTD (time to distance) runs - so most car owners will disable ETS before attempting a TTD run, choosing instead to limit slip through the use of grippier tires, running on better surfaces, or a combination of the two. Those who are really serious will employ slicks, racing clutches, wheelie bars, and spend tens of thousands of dollars trying to squeeze every last hundredth of a second out of their cars.

I'm not talking about Traction Control systems.......i never mentioned them, and yes i know you disengage any of them before you try to do any sort of drag...I have two friends with M3's been there done that...

Yes, you were - you talked about positrack - an earlier traction control system. And you asserted that the use of such a device made a car's top end suffer. You know, positrack wasn't just some mythical beast that only gearheads put on their cars, along with traction bars, ladder racks, 1050 dominators, edlebrock manifolds, 491 Muncie's, etc - they're used widely in any application where there's a lot of power to be put to the wheels.

FYI: No, the Lamborghini was not faster than the McLaren F1. Like you said, back it up with facts, so here's some facts.

According to your own source, http://www.fast-autos.net/topspeed.html - it was NOT the LM model.

Oh, here's another factoid: The McLaren F1 holds the Guinness World Record for being the most powerful standard production car made.

http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/...recordid=43463

There's the facts. Gonna keep talking outta your ass?

Heh, seems there's a typo on that Guiness page. I'm pretty darn sure that record wasn't set in 1985

I'd go with the more expensive one, just because the cheaper one will only scream out "cheap loser trying to look cool."

Ah! Reno, I see you're of the "I'm going to buy a Hummer but only drive it around town and not do anything even remotely sporty!" camp.

I wouldn't consider a Hummer "cool." Now a Lambourghini Murcielago...oooh...that's cool.

And anyway, a hummer is a lot better offroader than...well, any other "sport utility" even if sport utilities are for "cool" soccer moms and fat guys.

Well, a Hummer is "cool" inasmuch as it is expensive. And I was comparing people that buy Intel proc's to people that buy Hummers but only drive around town with them. In other words, if you're going to use 3.0GHz, only Intel can provide it. But if you're going to buy an expensive Intel processor only for its name value, then it's like gratuitiously buying a Hummer.

The new hummers that are out go for less than 50 grand, that's not expensive...a quarter of a million dollars is expensive. A hummer is the "lay man's" "cool" car.

Anyway, if anyone is going to offroad, it better be in a big ass truck...because no SUV has the clearance for it. And the only people that buy hummers anyway are gangsters, and I doubt they are computer geeks.

AMD is like a Chevy Camaro with rust and Intel is like the Ford Mustang GT...the camaro is less expensive and faster, is of lesser build quality (fragile cores, heat buildup, lower frequency capability), but the mustang is faster, can hit much higher speeds, and is solidly built (invincible processor, can hit MUCH higher frequencies).

Ugh, I'm done with this thread too.
