Cthulhu/Dagon 2012

I'm sitting here at my desk with a K6/2-450 in my hand, getting all mushy over its fate... I almost feel ashamed that it's not doing calculations anymore, as if it deserves a purpose. True, I have better chips lying around that I've laid off from my own upgrading. But this chip is different, as it came from an almost complete system that was scrapped by someone else. I scrounged parts of the casing that could possible be of some use, and this chip that will likely never run again. The system had been outdoors for most of the winter so I didn't want to give the whole system to someone else since it's hardly in full working order. But knowing how sturdy CPU's are I'm sure that.., no I feel that this one is still just fine. I wish there was a board where one could just plug in these leftover guys to do some work. Calculating primes, finding a cure for cancer, just something.
It also strikes me how aunfair it is that motherboards rarely get the same recognition. Especially nowadays when motherboards fill all the more parts of a system. Yet somehow a single CPU is easier to relate to. Yes, I also just now had a beer with that pizza... But now what about your feelings for old chips?

i feel it's more about the feelings you associate with the object. In your case, an older model CPU. (Brings back memories before the 1GHz barrier). What were you going through when you were using that cpu? Those memories attach themselves to objects so you feel nostalgia and longing when you see / use the object. It might seem odd that a computer part would be setimental, but it's completely understandable. It's like objects help us remember what we can't on our own...
But anyways, i definately don't like throwing away decent computer parts. I have a bunch of old parts that could make a 'working' computer. I hope i find someone, maybe my little sister, to build it for

ive got an old, almost fully complete system sitting here next to me. im contemplating weather i should just dump the damn thing or let it keep collecting dust here.
all it really needs is a new harddrive and cpu fan and some cheap vid card and its good to go again. |

I keep an old Athlon 900 Thunderbird processor on my desk and I frequently consider building a system around it just to see if I can run it over 1Ghz. That damn processor caused me a lifetime of pain as I could never quite reach that golden figure. Also keep to hand an Athlon 700 Slot processor just so that I can pick it up and giggle at the sheer size of it, it's like a paperback book. Firstly what were they thinking of and secondly how technology advances in a relatively short time (for comparison some processors can now be overclocked by the base mhz of that monster).

The thing that I remember nicely is my old and trusty voodoo 3, itīs the first card that made me enjoy the games in my computer and I had it from 1999 to 2003
when I couldnīt play new games because of the lack of new driver
