??? Any Musicians?

I was just wondering if there are any musicians here. If so, what instrument do you play and what style of music. I play bass for a metal band. I hate to "classify" the style of music that I play, b/c in todays music there really isn't distinct(sp) lines anymore, but for the sake of a general title it works.

Yooo, Alto Sax...Played for 9 years...primarily classic music, I also did Jazz Band and all that Pep Band stuff in high school..but on my own I would play solos accompanied by piano.

I'm rusty, but...

...I do have about 12 years of classical cello lessons still in me head and can still fiddle around with it pretty good. I also play some bass & tenor banjo. (Me brother played bass, my sister viola; we did the family orchestra thing together. Happy memories.) It turns out tenor banjo has the same fingering/strings as a cello, so I didn't have to learn much. (But I don't play it like a banjo either.)

Would be nice if we could start a band

I used to play progressive with the band, we'd have always liked some 'classical' strings, like the cello, but we had to stick with the common 2 guitars/bass/drums. Ppl we knew who played violin and such were from another movie - classical etc.

Now my favourite music is - besides the progressive and punk/alternative stuff - the early Joni Mitchell albums, Cohen, George Brassens... too bad I suck at finger picking.

Digi: Isn't the banjo tuning the same as for guitar (EBGDAE), or is it in a lower key... C?

Methinks you're confusing a banjo with a tenor banjo. I don't know about a banjo, but I wouldn't be surprised if you were right and it was tuned in thirds. (I can NOT do thirds! I have enough trouble switching to fourths on bass!) The tenor banjo comes in either a 4 or 5 string variety, (like the cello, but 5 strings are pretty rare), and is tuned CGDA-E with C being low and E being that optional 5th string....just like a cello.

I found one in my aunts basement when I was about 12-13 and was just totally amazed at being able to pick up an instrument I'd never seen and being able to play it pretty decent....she gave it to me on the spot and I annoyed people with it for YEARS! (Cool as hell Aunt and my fave, thanks Aunt Moody! )

I lost it about 9 years ago when I pretty much lost everything. I did manage to hang on to my cello "Lucifer" though which is on a shelf in the living room like a decoration. It's fun to pull it down and play with the kids with it now and again, maybe one day I'll actually focus on it a bit and try and brush up for fun.

Most probably - I had no idea there were many kinds of banjo... When I read your post I thought maybe it's like what I know to be a banjo, different sizes. I only saw a banjo - whichever type - once, but it was all untuned, so I couldn't make the correct tuning out. I think it had a fifth string, only halfway up the neck.

I'm confused about the tuning...

CGDA-E with C being low
CGD - fifths? That must be tough! With a guitar you get EBGDAE, high to low, some people alternately tune the lower E to D, but mainly use that either 'free string' or with a barre with the next string - fifths always come handy in a chord.

Joni Mitchell always uses alternate tunings, far from the classical one, which makes it hard to figure out what she's doing. Also true for Robert Fripp (King Crimson), I think he uses a combination of fifths.

Hmm, I'd better stop raving

Yup, that's a tenor banjo alright. Don't feel bad, I didn't have a clue that there was more than one kind either 'til I found that old one in the basement.

CGDA-high E.

I always cheat and tune any electric bass into fifths. The frets still work, although I really prefer fretless. I think me fingers just think in fifths.

I don't know anything about the musicians ya named, but feel free to rave all you want. This is the OT lounge after all, and it feels good to get the old brain humming along some long unused paths.
