Car CD Player Question...
I'm thinking about getting a CD Player for my car (a 1995 Bonneville) It currently has a Cassete Player so is this possible? I'm new to car audio. If I'm able to do so I have a couple choices in mind. Either this one for $129 Kenwood In-Dash CD Player
or would it be worth it to spend the extra money ($80 more) and get this one Kenwood SiriusĀ®-Ready CD Changer I would like something thats going to last and look a little fancy, yet I'm not about to dish out over $275 on one. So all you car audio fans how do these sound, or do you have any other suggestions? also It shouldnt be too much of a problem to install a new deck in the Bonneville...right?

it is very possible. just make sure to have them install it for you. As far as suggestions are concerned: although i don't have much experience with car audio, I have heard that pioneer CD players are very nice.

pioneers are indeed nice.
If you get a nice rig - GET AN ALARM and GET A HOOD LOCK so they can't just cut your battery wire and silence yer alarm. |

I've owned almost every major brand besides Sony. Right now I have a Kenwood head in my truck and am very pleased with it's performance. I just would recommend you get a warranty with it. If you haven't installed one of these before just like Dallastar said I would recommend you let someone else install it. It can be a real pain sometimes. |

If you're not using an amplifier don't get a Kenwood, the sound sucks without an amp. Get a 12 disc CD-Changer so you don't have to be carrying your whole CD collection.

I've been chugging with a 2 year old Alpine for a while, i can't totally remember the model number, i think 7391... The sound is great and there are many tweakings that can be had. I bought my bud the 7393 (not sure about model number) and he loved it. We were big into car audio, not ghetto shit, like tight sounding a clear music. But whatever. I like Alpine, but I got the hookup with it and got it for $100 less than posted in the store. But I don't think you are looking to spend that much money.

Yeah I would suggest having them install it. A lot of places (best buy, circuit city, or your local audio shop) run specials during christmas where they offer free installation on whatever you buy from them. I agree with everyone else; i really like the Alpine and Pioneer heads. (im going with the Alpine 7995, personally) Another brand to consider, if you want some good quality but not really a flashy look, would be Eclipse. Eclipse can get pretty pricey though, but i thought id suggest it anyways. As far as whether it will fit or not, if it wont fit directly they make adapter kits which are pretty cheap.

Personally I'd rather install my own. I've done 4 other installs for friends besides mine. I don't have the patience to wait like 4 days till Circuit City to install it.

Well I am very familiar with this type of things .... ie electronics and wires and whatnot. I have taken car parts off several times, such as the dash board. So for me, I would say a 9. Only because in some cars you have little space to work in. Like with my Ford Ranger, the stock wire harnesswould not come out beyond the sleeve that hold the player in the dash. If you have the tools and you are handy then this will not be a hard task. Wire cutters, strippers (or a knife), screwdrivers and maybe some sockets....It is really self explanatory...

Well this might help Crutchfield.com they give you everything you need to install a unit yourself wireharness instuctions for Your car and 24 7 tech support. I have had Alpine's and Sony's and a few other car stereo's. The worst are Sony's and Pioneer. the sound quality is very poor the sony I had would not work if it was below 60 F. I curruntly have an older kenwood It slams. Just another tip Do Not Let Circuit Sh**y install or Best Buy install they over charge you on Kits and never do a good job.

Personally I'd never buy anything retail. I look at Cructhfield, I get it quarterly, the prices are jacked. But for a first time person, yes, it is good. Yeah Sony can't do shit for sound quality. Exactly why I got my hands on an Alpine. The bass on Sony's are horrible. Pioneer, those built in equalizers...what a joke.

Installing a stereo is a snap if you RTFM.
First up: Pick out your stereo with the help of a qualified sales person at a respectable audio shop. They'll be able to help you decide on the unit that will work best with your car, assuming you're not going to change out amps, speakers, etc. Some cars actually have a secondary amplifier that drives the speakers, and some of these are high voltage, some are low. If you don't get a stereo with the right outputs, you'll have to get an adapter to go in between. You'll also want to buy the harness adapter for your make/model vehicle to go on your stereo. This will make it infinitely easier. It's a must-have. So just go ahead and get it. Assuming you're installing a single DIN unit, when you install the cage, don't bend every single locking tab in. Instead, only do about 4 of them. It's enough to secure the cage without making it a real bear to remove. For a double-DIN unit, you'll need to do 8 tabs or so as the unit has increased weight. Attach your car's harness to the adapter harness(es), then attach the antenna cable and harness to the back of the new unit. Make sure you have no exposed wires or RCA plugs. Then simply apply power and test - do you get sound? Can you tune in stations? If so, slide the unit and wiring carefully into the DIN cage until it locks down and clicks. If not, make sure your connections are tight. You can't plug it in wrong - the plugs and sockets are designed to work only one way. Done right, this takes about 30-45 minutes depending on whether you have the tools to remove your existing car stereo. With many Ford vehicles there are four holes around the face of the radio - 4 hefty nails inserted carefully in these holes will release the unit and allow you to gently pull it out. And you don't need any knowledge of wiring, electronics, voodoo, witchcraft, all you gotta be able to do is: 1) Unplug old shit 2) Plug in new shit As for wanting it done professionally, most local area radio shops will do it for about $25 or so. Best buy does stereo installs, Mobile One does as well, and you don't wait weeks to get them done - they will do them on the spot during the week in most cases. If not, check your local pro shops - most of them have less traffic and can accomodate you. |

Make sure you check the mounting depth. I believe in that car there is a tab that comes up for mounting the stock unit- (I has to break it off to install a Denon CD in my dad's 95 lumina (pain in the @$$, However your care may have a diferent factory head unit.

Yeah, My ranger had something like that too, if i left it then the aftermarket player wouldn't fit...it was there to hold the stock cd player firmly.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, but I just found out if I buy the CD Deck at Circuit City (which i'm planning on doing) they will install it for free as long as the decks over $100 which it is. I think I'll do it this way just to be safe. Thanks again!

I was thinking about adding two more speakers two my current two speaker setup, anyone know if this is hard? It's for an 89 Volvo DL wagon(real pimping, I know). Anyone had any experience with this car's stereo wiring? Just figured I jump on this thread, good to see some informative posts here!

You want to add more speakers? Do you mean that you already have spaces available to drop extra speakers? Or do you mean that you want to add more speakers than there are spots for?

One VERY IMPORTANT thing if you do this yourself disconnect the Bat. If you do not you will risk possible Airbag explosion. I have seen this a few times since cars started coming with them.

as far as a cd player i would recommend alpine i have had several different brands before sticking with the alpine. they sound great and hardly ever skip. installing it yourself is a breeze if you buy the right stuff. all you need is the right wiring harness adapter and an in dash install kit. they are labeled so all you have to do is read on them for the one that fits your car and it is all color coded so just match colors on the wires. i have installed more than i can count for freinds and myself.

I used to have a JVC in my car (until I sold the car) that cost me about 400 bucks, if you're serious about good quality, expect to pay that much. Plus, if your speakers are POS factory speakers meant for playing cassettes, you may need to get those replaced to. But if you just want to listen to CDs, 130-200 bucks is all you need spend.
