Best and worst moderated forums
Any of you peops have a forum you used to visit which was poorly moderated? you know the type, mods who power trip and just ban people left, right and centre for no reason?
I used to visit a tech forum all the time but the moderators on it were abymsal, so I mainly spend my time on hardocp, here and anandtech now. Whats your view on forums, they dont have to be tech related, which do you think have the best and worst moderators? My vote for the best would be hardocp and here and another forum I visit which isnt tech related so probably wont interest many people. To me good moderators are people who just remove hotheads quick without too much public intervention and dont post things like "one more post and im going to kick you f*&king a$$ over the net". So whats your votes? just throw a few names out there for your mods of the year, and your lamers of the year! personally I dont really care for sites like R3D in which kids just run amok... |

I think you might reword your thread title or dismiss the idea that you would get any feedback regarding best or worst. The question is flawed, so what is the real purpose of your thread?
I honestly dont think any of volunteers that serve on DH staff would post either. If you had volunteered to be a DH moderator, you might find this thread potentiolly insulting or inapporopriate....I sure would. if any member has questions or feedback they choose the "feedback" thread. Your thread invites more than just idle banter, as a lifetime member of DH, I would decline to answer your query anyway... perhaps you can reword or edit your thread, otherwise...meh.

I think ill stick to the graphics cards forums, these off topic forums are way too weird, everyone seems really defensive, on edge and paranoid.

guys to be honest beyond honesty,i could perhaps name a few forums which do have appalling moderators but i will refrain from mentioning them....but i will say i have been banned from these forums (under a different user name) within two posts...i do prefer the more respectfull forums such as DH (not because im staff) that is way before becoming a mod.
The ADMINISTRATORS of these forums were also members at driverheaven (yes have been banned members since) who have constantly complained everywhere else for the same shit they dish out..(crybabys if you ask me). What comes around so to speak.(but i will respect these and will not mention which forums these are). I sincerely hope you all think we do a good job in moderating posts....and hope to continue this way as fair as possible... At this moment im not sure on how to class this thread,it could cause a flame zone type of post.....but i can actually see where you are coming from.. if it is kept respectful that is. and as for any VOLUNTEERS to become mods.....nobody does so....admin choose the mods in respect of the capability's within a general area. Mmm actually I can see what Jeff is talking about. I'd say that said moderators are a bit touchy if they jump to conclusions(its pretty clear after you read the whole thing) but I could also see why moderators could get defensive.
Actually DH is quite well moderated. Theres that one blasted forum that someone needs to do something about. People are swearing and stuff all OVER the place...I think its called theeee...Oh wait thats the FWZ :LMAO: no but seriously lets see...I recall Guru3d was kinda poorly moderated for a bit but I've heard since that its made a comeback. Other than that, I havent visited many forums other than Robotech.com and Driverheaven.net

This post can be taken a few ways, but i like to keep an open mind and think that he was not trying to be offensive to DH and its moderators and was actually asking a valid question. in only browse one other forum but im not going to say wat actual forum due to wat is discussed in these forums. So i guess i can say DH is the best moderated for me cause its the only one i have been a part of so long.

it's all a difference of opinion at the end.....i have quite often seen members cry like hell and tell porky's on active websites to the reasons they have been removed from any forum, just to make them look the innocent party to try to make admin/mods look bad......which is quite far from the truth in most cases. It's annoying to see this happen when they seem to think of adult conversations.....
if you're kicked of a forum big friggin deal...move on & grow up... (just my opinion) |

I base my perceptions on several things so take for what it s worth, moderators dont earn a single shilling for moderating right, they do so because they can fulfill a voluntary obligation, but there are perks of course.
Members who feel or believe that a forum is poorely moderated actually a mechanism that entitles them to complain and get feedback in a timely manner whether they like it or not. I dont see anything productive or rewarding from a thread about whether any forums are poorly or fairly moderated as "all roads lead to Rome". Regardless of whether the threads are positive or negative in nature, we have members that frequent many different sites and I have seen banned former members complain about DH and Zardon, but the irony is that eventually everyone comes here for a little while and most choose to stay. My point is this, whether any thread of this type perpetuates or not, staff and members are here because they sincerely want to be. Although I rarely disagree with a moderator, if I thought a forum was poorly moderated I would sure tell someone with PM or IM those concerned. I honestly feel that inviting speculation about DH moderation can either be entertaining or not, but that isnt my concern. I have alot of experience within the past couple of years with threads like this and a great deal of trepidation about responding without a measure of respect to the staff, and the owner. I dont think this thread is a threat, perhaps I would give the staff and owner their due as YAY ANDREW has said. Even though the thread didnt direcly mention DH or ask for comparisons, I must tell you that all of us wander the sites and read threads from banned and former members that are negative in nature. I often see driveby posts by staff members of other sites as well. Although I used to think that former members stay away from DH, I know the opposite is also true, and I can site several examples, but it is not worth mentioning, I base my opinion on my own experiences with a former member who killed my own site with negative rhetoric and deconstructive behavior.

I visit a couple other forums. I used to go to nVnews.net on a regular basis, but i got banned from there because the admin Muya is nothing but a ban-happy admin when you speak your mind. I still go there once in a while just to read, not to post. The other forum i visit is Xtremeresources.com froums. The guys there are pretty cool, but hardly anybody posts there, so i hardly visit there.

I only hang around the forums I like, and they are all pretty easy to post on. DH, rage3d, and emutalk. The admins on these sites all seem fair to me; the people that get banned deserve it.

This is my favorite forum by far and it shows in my post count, my reviews, and guides. If I didn't love it here at DH I wouldn't work so hard for it.

The only forums that I completely stay away from are the Steam Forums, and the Bungie Forums, both run rampant with bad members, multiple duplicate threads, trashtalkers, and whiners.

Worst moderated = Steam forums, hands down, no exceptions.

heres the thing about steam forums. The moderators let things go rampant and its wrong...but take someone asking for help...ACTUALLY HELP THEM!!! and do you know what you get? You get someone that bends over backwards kissing your ass with gratitude. Steam forums is full of some REALLY NICE people that just want help and are so despirate for anything(considering the mods are basically noshows in there)
now then again...the mods are usually(at least thats what one of em told me) employees of Valve...so basically they have fulltime jobs that dont involve the forums and rarely have time. Not the moderators fault. Its the COMPANIES fault for not getting volunteer moderators to help out.

I agree with the basic sentiment that this forum is a very friendly one. When i first joined, the mods and admins were friendly people, and i could see that they did not class themselves above the general members and would joke around from time to time. as for experiences in other forums, i can't say much, as DH is probably the site i visit most, i rarely visit other forums

I was told there was another forum looking for staff members so I went and asked to join. I was let on the review staff and things were going great until the administrator banned a member for unfound reasons. When I heard about this I told him either he unbans him or I quit because I won't tolerate that kind of behavior and power trip. So I quit. It was that experience that made me realize what a great forum this place actually is and I'd do my best to keep it that way. |

DH is by far the best moderated forum of all the ones I read. You know its a good forum when the mods do their work silently and without ego trips. If not for the insane post counts I wouldnt even guess who the mods were

eventho, the thread starter might not get so many responds from people here on those questions.
but, imo, the initial questions and messages of thread starter are okay and are not flawed at all. read your first post, you were jumpping to that conclusion too fast on this one fallang_jeff. you were underestimate the DH mods/admins's ability to make good judgments or their reasoning ability. |

Maybe it's just me, but I've found that almost any forum that gets into a CS:S discussion, tends to turn to shit pretty quickly. It's like it brings out the idiots. Then again, the crappy behavior I often see during the game is just as bad. You know; idiots screwing around with their mikes, the senseless abuse thrown at inexperienced players etc.
Some of the GTA forums can get rather silly as well. And I remember being suprised at some of the nastiness on th official Max Payne 1 & 2 forums as well. Mostly, IMHO, this was because the mods didn't do their jobs. I have also noticed that the tone of a games "official" forum can go south fairly quickly if, when the game's initially released, mods don't show their faces and let the fans know whats going on regarding bug-fixes and patchs and stuff. As for DH; I'm very happy with how it's managed. The mods are quick to let people know where the line is, and then it's really up to the individual what course they take. I've seen some reasonably volatile topics come up at DH, but if the discussion is legit, then respect for individual opinion is given. This thread is an example of that very attitude. Tolerance and fair-mindedness(?) generally rule here, and that's a positive reflection on all the active mods here at DH. |

DH is pretty good mod wise. OCAU (overclockers Australia) is imo the worst modded place...
I wont go into why... |

I think it's a valid thread, it'd be interesting to here from you guys what you consider makes a good forum in terms of moderation.
I didn't really bother with many forums before I joined DH, mainly because everything i saw was either unmoderated kids talking 1337 or power hungry mods stomping round with a ban stick. At DH we really do try and promote a friendly atmosphere, I think the flamezone helps keep a lot of the crap away from the site, and in terms of suffering muppets we don't. We're fair in what we do and we do it to keep DH a good friendly site, where people can actually find knowledge in the forums and not jus crap. my 2c.

I know initially I was concerned about whether this would turn into a complaint thread, but having been to several other sites where other members go, I guess I have seen many former members complain to ad nauseum about DH, and yet the pop in and out quite a bit, I guess I am thinking globally, whether DH continues one more day or one more year etc., it seems we all seem to run into each other on web in different places. I know in the past DH has had some colorful and demented mods.....LOL, now they mod other sites now...and they sure have calmed down...LOL....
except one bloody canadian who wreaks havoc no matter where he goes......meh..
