Does anyone plan to join the army?
Hey folks, it's me...AGAIN
Anyhow, in Israel it's a must for anyone aged 18 and finished school... I just described myself :P , well, apparently, I'll be recruiting on November 21st to the IAF as a Control Tower Supervisor dude (The one that speaks to planes saying who can lift off and who can't :P ) So, is there anyone else besides me that planes on joining the army?

I doubt it... I wouldn't be averse to working for the military if whatever work I end up doing brought me there, but I'm not going to actively search employment in the army, and especially not in any form that involves combat.

I did my short 10months service in the swedish artillery 12 years ago and think much better of it now than I did for most of that time. I think that I would feel good about serving in some swedish UN force for a couple of years, but theres probably no chance with so many applicants with better physique and training. Today the military service is not so mandatory anymore in real practice, as cutbacks puts most young guys in an inactive reserve. But to those where conditions are anything like in sweden with not so much of penalism and no real chance of actual warfare I recommend doing it. Some may know that they just won't fit in but most are just anxious about the big change it means to their civilian life. It is a big change for most but that can be mostly good, like with how you'll be meeting lots of people you'd never meet otherwise. Many assholes for sure but also some that are truly great friends and role models. For those who fare any risk of actual warfare or much harsher training conditions I'd say think long and hard about it. Especially if you have any ideas of adventure and glory in your head when thinking about going in. Last edited by mkk; Jul 14, 2005 at 10:47 AM. |

Well i can sum up this question real well ............ HELL NO. Its not like i would pass the drug test anyway. The military and I have completely different views when it comes to how i want to be treated. But i still respect anyone who has gone through or is currently in the military. it takes alot. i dont think i could do it.

overly-romanticised life in the army
Quote:
Military service SOUNDS like a meaningful life, but 95% of the time you're digging ditches, cleaning latrines, or putting up with political BS. I'm not in the army but most of my highschool friends joined the reserves... its not all its cracked up to be. The biggest challenge with a military career is the lack of free will and self-determination. I'd find it stiffling. I could not see myself as an enlisted man, maybe an officer but that's years of training and a lifelong commitment. Don't take this the wrong way...I am impressed and proud of my friends who have served. I also recongise it takes alot of self sacrifice. But people should join the military with their eyes open... its not something to do just because you're bored. PS Talk to pigdog if you want a realistic assessment what military service is like. He's had an opportunity to actually 'make a difference' as a result of his career so he's got a good view.

Well, in Greece we have to join the army for 1 year. I'll go soon (some time during Autumn), but that doesn't mean I like it
I respect the people that join the army, it takes a lot of courage indeed. HOWEVER, don't expect to join the army and stay in an office for the rest of your life
