US Muslims Issue Fatwa Against Terrorism

After repeated denunciations of the terrorist acts of Muslim extremists, a US Muslim group has issued a fatwa (or religious edict) against militant violence. Around 130 US Muslim groups have signed on in support of the religious ruling so far.

"We clearly and strongly state (that) all acts of terrorism targeting civilians are 'haram' (forbidden) in Islam," the edict, issued by the Fiqh Council of North America, states. This follows an anti-terrorism advertising campaign begun this month.

This is not the first of such edicts issued by Muslim groups in the wake of terrorist attacks. Around 500 British Muslim leaders issued such an edict after the London bombings, as have clerics in Spain (SN reported). They are only binding locally.
