exclamation I need help playing a movie in Windows Media Player

I need help. I just downloaded a movie (.avi) and when I went to play it, it said Not a valid media type. So I downloaded about a thousand different codecs (including divx), and now, it plays, but there is no video or sound. Could anyone please help? I will be refreshing this page constintly so I can answer any question you may have. By the way, Windows 98SE and Windows Media Player 7.1.

Thanks in advance!

You can go here . There is a small program you can dl called gspot2.0. This program will tell you all the codecs that might be required for sound or video.

What was the link for the movie? I have literally dozens of codecs here, and I can test things out... and one possibility is that the video is corrupt (did you redownload it to check for that? send me the md5 checksum too if you can...)

OK, got that figured out... sorta. Turns out the .avi wasn't a complete file, and as many of you (esp. 56kers) know, .avi's need to be complete to work (unlike those wonderful mpegs...)

Here is the text of my conversation with ChristJGoodrich:

ChrisJaieG: Hello
ChrisJaieG: ChrisJGoodrich from DH.net
ChrisJaieG: hello?
allmachtiges joe: hey
allmachtiges joe: ya
allmachtiges joe: you were the guy asking about the .avi that didn't play, right?
ChrisJaieG: yeah
ChrisJaieG: I d/l'ed it on Kazaa
allmachtiges joe: k
allmachtiges joe: right click on it
ChrisJaieG: I can't send it to you because I am on 56K :-[
ChrisJaieG: OK...
allmachtiges joe: its fine
allmachtiges joe: same here
allmachtiges joe: right click
allmachtiges joe: and say what it sez for the properties
allmachtiges joe: not the filesize and name
allmachtiges joe: the other tab
allmachtiges joe: does it list the bitrate and codec?
ChrisJaieG: nope
allmachtiges joe: what does it say? (copy and paste, its faster)
ChrisJaieG: Video Format... 352 x 288, 93708 Frames, 25.000 Frames/Sec, 20 KB/Sec, Unknown Format
allmachtiges joe: 20KB/Sec?
allmachtiges joe: are you sure?
allmachtiges joe: that makes me think its a corrupt video file
ChrisJaieG: I d/l'es it FAST
allmachtiges joe: how big is the whole file?
ChrisJaieG: www.CPCRepair.com/wowwow.JPG
ChrisJaieG: check that out
ChrisJaieG: That is me d/ling the file
allmachtiges joe: k
allmachtiges joe: what is the filesize?
ChrisJaieG: It says it there
allmachtiges joe: :-)
allmachtiges joe: thats not what im asking
allmachtiges joe: thats the filesize for the full file
allmachtiges joe: im thinkin its corrupted
allmachtiges joe: do the right click thing again and see if it matches up
allmachtiges joe: if you were on 56k, and it sed that fast, it makes me think somethin was up
allmachtiges joe: possibly file corruption
ChrisJaieG: 2 of 2 = 75,951
allmachtiges joe: 75951 bytes?
allmachtiges joe: kilobytes?
ChrisJaieG: KB
allmachtiges joe: k
allmachtiges joe: well
allmachtiges joe: that solves that
allmachtiges joe: that doesn't match up with any of those filesizes in the screenshot
ChrisJaieG: yeah
ChrisJaieG: damn
ChrisJaieG: So, I don't have it
allmachtiges joe: and .avi files won't work unless they are uncorrupted and incomplete
ChrisJaieG: :-@
allmachtiges joe: ya, sorry
allmachtiges joe: i'll post this IM into DH
allmachtiges joe: don't worry about it
ChrisJaieG: Thanks anyway
allmachtiges joe: and ill remove the URL
allmachtiges joe: no warez at dh ;-)
ChrisJaieG: You can keep the URL there
ChrisJaieG: I don't care
allmachtiges joe: all right
allmachtiges joe: sry i couldn't help more
ChrisJaieG: Thanks again
ChrisJaieG: No prob
allmachtiges joe: k
allmachtiges joe: hope to see you around at DH
allmachtiges joe: cya (going back to post)
ChrisJaieG: You will ;-)
