Yes and no.

Basically, the DirectX calls are mapped through OpenGL. What does this mean? Well, it means that it's accelerated as OpenGL acceleration on Linux has been around longer than it has on Windows.

Remember Unreal? Well, when they made the DirectX windows driver for it, it only worked on 1 card well - Matrox G200. A few months later, the WINE folks got the game working for Linux by remapping the DirectX calls to OpenGL.

Given that DirectX on windows was flaky at this time - and so were the graphics drivers, Unreal played better and faster under WINE on Linux than it did on the same spec Windows machine.

Today, DirectX has matured into a decent graphics language and has had stable and fast drivers from most IHVs for some time.

So this once true wonder no longer holds true - WINE won't run any games faster unless they have pretty poor DirectX coding.....

My coding expertise is pretty minimal, so basically what I do is go through sourceforge, find the projects I like, download them, compile, generate a few errors, do some debug calls to do some prelim grunt work, then post em up and let the heavy hitters figure the issues out - the only thing I have actually contributed code to is OpenOffice - I co-wrote a very minor bug fix way back before it came out past beta stages with some other guy, and let him take the credit, as I simply told him what was wrong and what needed to be done, while he implemented the code...

Doh! That will teach me for only reading from one source lol! How does the Open Gl perform in lInux compared to windows as I only run games in Open GL....

Mac Daddy:

WOW, I thought this thread was pretty much
Seems its not

When Unreal came out I was running a Matrox G200, lucky me
On the Open GL Platform, was surprised by Linux using it first.
As far of subjects, including Linux and now WINE, this is the reason I originated this thread, to LEARN, and get some opinons,
which are coming fast and furious, KEWL

Too UBER,
lets give some advise to Louie6666 Bout running a complete Linux Desktop, and please post it here as I would like to see it, as other members would

Too Tosh,
Nice too see ya come back,LOL
No ranting and raving here my freind.

Too Louie,
Nice to see ya "ABOUT"

*COUGH*COUGH*

Is it illegal to ask someone with a good current distro if'n they'd be willing to burn me and mail me the disks? The latest distro I got won't support me 815 chipsets. (It's open source, so it's not illegal...right? Free as in beer or speech?)

Mac Daddy:

Depends where it comes from, DH is not the place for that as far as I'm concerned. We have PM's and Emails.
Free beer sounds great

PM's, I speak no further

If this is true, then me big reason for not doing linux is officially moot and I'm behind the times!
I have seen games run anywhere from 0% to 20% (normally 5%-10%) faster in WineX emulation - $5 per month to access WineX though, so I don't have it - no point until I learn the basics of how to use linux, no?

Explain more about wine X $5 a month, what service do they provide, don't get it, do you subscribe 4 the software or support type web site?
