So who do you guys think is the best bassist of all time?

My top 3 would have to be:
1. Les Claypool
2. John Paul Jones
3. Victor Wooten

In no particular order:

John Paul Jones - Under rated. If you listen to early recordings he is keeping up with Page note for note.
John Entwistle - invented thunder
Stanley Clarke - invented "slap"
Flea - best ever?

Most bass players of any caliber and skill have taken a bow to this innovator and legend in the Jazz music hall of fame... http://www.mingusmingusmingus.com/ I know that lots of you like Flea and Geddy Lee, but even they take a bow to Charles Mingus...

I would have to agree with that list, Flea and Fieldy did some weird stuff. Guitarists > bassists though because Bass is so easy to learn, even if you wanted to be a pro.
