DisplaySearch: Sony rises to top of LCD TV market in 4Q05

The fourth quarter of 2005 was the first quarter since the inception of the LCD TV market that Sharp was not the number one worldwide vendor in terms of units shipped and revenues. Instead, last quarter Sony jumped from number four to number one in the global LCD TV market in both units and revenues due to the successful launch of its new Bravia series and optimized panel capacity through its TFT LCD joint venture with Samsung, S-LCD.

Sony's unit share surged from 9% to 15% on 164% growth. What makes the unit growth even more impressive was its strong focus on larger sizes with 56% of its output 32-inches and larger, the highest of any of the top eight suppliers.

Sony enjoyed over 900% on-quarter growth in the 40-inch and above segments and over 175% growth at 32-inches, enabling it to earn the number one position in both the 30-32-inch and the 40-42-inch categories.

Sony was also number one in the 26-27-inch and 22-23-inch markets. As a result of its dominant position in the larger sizes, Sony held a 19% to 13% revenue share advantage over Sharp, which had been number one on both a unit and revenue basis worldwide since the inception of the LCD TV market.
