IBM, Microsoft, and the future of the whole widget

The EET covered a recent talk by IBM's CTO, Dr. Bernard Meyerson. Meyerson talked in general terms about the future of the industry, and the problems with CMOS scaling. From the summary, it looks like Meyerson made many of the points that IBM and others have been making for a long time regarding the industry's current shift from clockspeed advances to architectural and software advances as the key driver of performance improvements. Meyerson sees the reign of CMOS holding out over the next decade, as a number of technologies (strained silicon, SOI, and new transistor types) keep feature sizes shrinking and transistor densities rising.
