Number of iTunes Users Surpasses RealPlayer

Apple's popular iTunes program continues to grow in popularity, and should end up with more users than RealPlayer sometime in 2006. iTunes users are using the program twice as long as RealPlayer and Windows Media Player, according to reports. Once iTunes overtakes RealPlayer later this year it will become the second most widely used media software player. Nielsen/NetRatings report that iTunes should have just under 30 million users, which is still far behind the 80 million unique users of the Microsoft Windows Media Player program.

The popularity of iTunes as a streaming media player is undoubtedly related to the burgeoning popularity of podcasts; Apple was the first major player to jump on the podcast bandwagon, integrating a podcast directory into its iTunes Music Store and building podcast subscription features into the iTunes player.
