Playstation 3 will be region free

"SONY has confirmed that its next generation Playstation three will be region free, at least for gaming.

The outfit had hinted that the move was possible some months ago but it was only officially confirmed yesterday.

Ironically the move is designed to combat piracy. If game players can’t play imported games they tend to chip their consoles, which in turn allows pirates to release illegal copies. Illegal games also run better on chipped consoles.

The move would also enable games makers to do world-wide launches of games, particularly as Blu-Ray will mean that multiple languages can be stored on each disk."

sounds like an excuse to have multi-disc blu-ray content from day 1 to me

I think it's brilliant..... sony decided to do something right at least... at least it's one step closer to a product that's decent..

ONE Disc to be mastered, and mass produced for the whole world... this would cut costs quite a bit....

Did they at least dump off that idea of I.D. tagging each game to the PS3 that ran it first? Because THAT seemed ridiculous, especially when you consider the inevitable "disk read error" that you will eventually get with Sony products. Or do they STILL expect you to to buy all the games again if your PS3 dies?
