Study: violent video games sales are comparatively low, in decline

Video games have been around for over three decades now, and nobody can deny that they are here to stay. What is endlessly debated is the question of whether or not violent video games promote violence in society. The debate reached a height after the Columbine shootings in 1999—when it was revealed that the killers were DOOM players—and although that level of hysteria has died down since, the issue has never really gone away.

In the US, there is a bill currently being proposed by Senators Lieberman (D-CT), Clinton (D-NY), and Bayh (D-IN), called the "Family Entertainment Protection Act" (FEPA) that aims to create a federal enforcement program for video game sales practices. This treats the gaming industry quite different from the movie industry, whose ratings system does not have legal enforcement to back it up. (Oddly, however, there is no public outcry to ban R-rated movies or prosecute theaters who let minors view them.)
