PayPal launches text messaging for goods

MTV, the National Basketball Association and others will accept payments from a new PayPal service allowing purchases via cell phone text message, the companies said Thursday.

The move by PayPal, an online payment company and a unit of online auctioneer eBay, marks a big step in bridging the worlds of e-commerce and brick-and-mortar stores, by giving consumers a pay option via telephone.

According to PayPal Mobile's Web site, consumers will can look for its "Text to Buy" logo in magazines and newspapers or on TV, billboards, posters or Web sites. When they see the logo, they then key a product code into their cell phones. PayPal's site has a list of about two dozen items already for sale, including a "Napoleon Dynamite" DVD, Paul Frank watches, Amnesty International donation, Top Chef kitchen towels, and a three-pack of crank T-shirts.
